I would recommend these guns, depending on your budget:

$60: Trishot shotgun(Might be a little hard for a 15 year old boy to pump Maybe not...)

$100: CYMA AK-47, one of the best airsoft gun for the price(Has battery and charger in the package)

$150-160: G&G Combat Machine M4(All of these guns come with a battery and charger in the package deal)

The following guns you will need to buy a battery and charger separately:

$200: King Arms M4

$250: Lonex M4

$300: VFC M4

Following gun only fits a 8.4v NiMh battery:

$400: Tokyo Marui AUG High Cycle (Will make all the other kids jealous)

PS: Most of these items are eligible for a discount coupon code unless otherwise specified on that page. Evike has a 18% off promotion going on, while Airsoft GI has a 16% off online purchases. Both these stores have a retail front, and Evike has an 18% off in store promotion as well, as Airsoft GI having a 20% off Thurday promotion in their walk in store.

Had it for years, no problems. Only reason I would ever get rid of mine is if I completely switch over to lipo.

Starter Guns:

Tippmann Commando: 150$

G&G CM Series: 100-250$

CYMA AK Series: ~100-200$

Classic Army EC-2: 185$, a bit overpriced but hey, its tan.

Gear:

Charger and a 9.6v battery: 34$

Don't forget eye pro. I use Revision Desert Locusts, but ESS goggles are great as well.

u/Goodgulf · 5 pointsr/radiocontrol

I don't recognize the chassis, so can't recommend a specific body. If you have a decent RC hobby shop close by, you could just take it there and get help fitting whatever bodies they have in stock.

The 27mhz, especially the crystal radio sets are quite old now, and may be hard to find or unreliable at best. You should be able to get any 2-3 channel car radio set and just replace the receiver you have with the one that will be included in the box. This one is priced very well, and should be an excellent radio for $37.

For the battery, that charger will work, the connector is a Standard / Tamiya plug. If that's the battery that's been in the attic, it's probably toast though, so again, off to the hobby store. You'll want a 7.2v NiCd or NiMh, unless you want to upgrade to LiPo, which will require a different charger. I'd stick with NiCd or NiMh for a kid though, as they're less hassle with charging safely and discharging to store.
Here's One for $18 and looks to have the right plug. A battery with higher mAh will last longer running the car.
This Charger will work fine, more expensive chargers will have more options, usually be able to charge faster, or different battery styles. I'd buy 2 batteries, run one and charge one, or charge both and go to the park.

Good luck and have fun!

Basically nothing, you can get a better charger for about the same money on Amazon

A little over budget, but that’s the cheapest I could do for a gun that’s actually good. Don’t forget face protection. ANSI Z87.1+ full seal goggles and a metal mesh lower face mask. I would suggest a pair of Pyramex I-Force goggles and a OneTigris half mesh mask. That’s what I use and it’s great.

u/waiting_for_rain · 3 pointsr/airsoft

Yep, generally that's a great starter. Pretty good externals for plastic, room for upgrades, not bad out of the box.

https://www.amazon.com/Tenergy-Universal-Smart-6V-Charger/dp/B003MXMJX8

is a good charger, generally you're looking for smart chargers. Unfortunately off top I can't think of a nimh battery that fits just a buffer tube. You might have to pick up a mag pouch and strap it to the stock.

u/Helevitia · 3 pointsr/rccars

This will work, but likely will charge slow. There is a lot of info to learn about battery charging.

If you're serious about starting airsoft, you should shop around evike.com or airsoftgi.com. Nothing against amazon, but their inventory just doesn't compare against the large variety of guns/accessories/parts that those websites carry. They both take paypal and their customer service is decent, so it isn't really a question of whether it's "easier" or not. Plus there are a lot more customer reviews on individual products.

As for the charger you want this. The same exact one is on evike also.

As for charging NiMH batteries, you can plug and charge whenever you want, regardless of how much charge is left in it. You can also store the battery without worrying how much charge is in it. NiMHs are great that way. The stock battery is usable as long as you use the smart charger from the getgo. NEVER use the "dumb" charger that comes with your gun. A lot of people are under the impression that stock batteries that come with a gun are crap. I think this is mostly a misconception as a result of new players using the "dumb" charger with their very first stock battery. The "dumb" chargers will ruin your batteries.

u/ktmrider119z · 2 pointsr/airsoft

If its NIMH just get this charger. $13.50 is a tiny investment to ensure your batteries stay in good condition.

u/H6obs · 2 pointsr/Nerf

Well it's probably possible, but not recommended... especially when you could get a charger for 14 dollars on Amazon that will charge that battery correctly. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003MXMJX8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_JnWpxb1XHX18Q

u/cjadelis12 · 2 pointsr/radiocontrol

Can't find the exact name of the connector for that battery, but that doesn't look like a contemporary standard. Which leads me to believe that it is a NiCd or NiMH battery.

Closest I can find is this listing: http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/con-240/2-conductor-locking-connectors-w/leads/1.html

For charging, any charger that has a NiMh or NiCd setting will do, though you will want to find out the cell count and what the chemistry is (NiMH vs NiCd). These types of batteries also have some special considerations when it comes to charging, as there used to be something about cell memory and the need to fully discharge the battery before charging. Something like this would probably do: https://www.amazon.com/Tenergy-Universal-Charger-Airsoft-Battery/dp/B003MXMJX8/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1469000731&sr=8-8&keywords=NiMh+battery+charger

Though you would want to find a matching connector and uh... do some surgery.

However, I would ultimately recommend finding a similarly sized and voltage Lipo battery instead to swap in for that battery. Mainly because they don't have that memory problem and have more support in terms of chargers, connectors, and so on, atleast for model aviation. You may be able to find a NiMh battery with a Traxxas connector and do that instead, as I know that they are still popular for RC cars.

Apologies for a bit of a long post, I hope that answers your question.

u/moto6523 · 1 pointr/rccars

Yes, that battery will work but you can probably find less expensive options. Just do a quick search on Amazon for a "6 cell NiMh 7.2v battery". The mAh rating tells you how much energy can be stored (the bigger number the longer the runtime. something between 3000 & 5000mAh will work well & give you good bang for the buck).

Ideally, you'll want EC3 connectors already installed on the battery, unless you want to buy an adapter or do some soldering.

Venom Batteries are nice because they come with adapters & eliminate some guesswork.

This charger will work for you. I had it when I first got into the hobby & it charged up a battery in about 45min. It should give you much faster charge times than the ECX charger found in the box.

u/nerys71 · 1 pointr/batteries

yes absolutely.

you may lose some life if you don't use matched cells but this is COMMON

RC Car battery packs (before lithium) worked this way.

you had 7 and 8 cell sub c cell packs. any of those chargers will charge your pack just fine.

charge at 1amp should be plenty safe a decent charger will auto detect full and stop.

do be sure to charge them separately the first time then discharge and charge "as a pack" only so the cells don't mismatch.

this will work just fine

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003MXMJX8/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687602&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B002PECWXC&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1SVXNCYT30XW7S7HEZA8

and it is cheap too. you should be able to get away with a 2amp charge if your using 2amp hour or better cells.

That's the call I would make in my opinion! Sure, the tenergy universal nimh charger is to go to charger found here on amazon. This will only work with nimh batteries but if you're looking to get back into airsoft, I'd have to recommend getting a lipo battery. I don't think they were around 10 years ago but as battery technology has evolved, they're the new emerging battery type that holds the same charge, but more consistently and in a smaller package. A 7.4v lipo is about the equivalent to 9.v nimh.

u/aghostbro · 1 pointr/airsoft

I was able to buy the same charger that is included in the battery + charger combo you linked for less on amazon. it may be possible to save some money by looking through all the charger/battery options available on Evike as well.

u/BQJJ · 1 pointr/airsoft

I'm on mobile/at work but it sounds like we play in similar terrain on a similar budget, so I'll share what I've got once I get home.

Edit: So far this is what I have, in no particular order -

I highly recommend you spend the extra 15$ and get this smart charger for your battery, you don't have to worry about unplugging your charger from your battery when its fully charged. It's one of the best things you can get for an AEG.

The charger and battery can be found on amazon for much cheaper and together they add up to about $34 so he would only need a dollar more of something to get free shipping if he doesn't have prime.

Charger shipped from Amazon

Battery from Battery Superstore

Battery superstore is very reliable for batteries if the battery doesn't work for any reason they will replace it.

The savings from this will bring the price under budget

Is this the kind of charger you are talking about? Appreciate all the tips, also I'll be sure to get face protection.

u/dcLookAtThis · 0 pointsr/airsoft

Also you can find those tenergy smart chargers on amazon for about 20 bucks here.

Other than that everything looks good!
