Below is a fun, light read. Good British wit combines with major medical developments to provide a greater understanding of medical history and a sensible chuckle. The author was a British surgeon and anesthetist per the internet.

This book has a few historical references to drugs and to how they became illegal.
It's funny because many of the drugs that are now illegal were very legal (and encouraged) at some time point in our history. For instance, Heroin was originally introduced as a substitute for Morphine addicts after WWI (I can't source that for you, but I remember it from one of my med school lectures).
