I've been in a similar situation so I'll share my two cents. I'd been pescatarian for 4 years and then vegan for ~3 months for moral + environmental reasons before I switched to AIP.

When I was vegan, I ate *a lot* of carbs (lots of gluten), nuts, and beans / soy. This is pretty typical for a vegan diet. But these are some of the biggest no-no's in AIP and it showed -- I had my *worst* symptoms in 4 years and nothing much had changed besides my diet. That's when I started to realize that just as a (typical) vegan diet can be really bad for autoimmune disorders, maybe AIP would actually work to make it better. So in a weird way, my terrible experience as a vegan fixed my skepticism about AIP. I've been on AIP for 4 months now and my symptoms are at their *best* in 4 years! Seeing these results is my motivation to never cheat.

These results are also my reason I stopped being vegan. For the first week of AIP, I tried to go vegan. But as far as I know, ***THERE IS NO VEGAN OR VEGETARIAN AIP PROTEIN***. Pea protein is not AIP (first Google search result returns this, which says so in the first paragraph). This is because peas are legumes, and legumes are not allowed in AIP.

So sorry to break this to you, but it's not enough to get your 2000 calories a day. You need proper nutrition and vegan AIP can't provide that. I know because I tried.

This was really, really hard for me to accept at first because going vegan just felt... right. But at the end of the day, it became a question about my health or my beliefs. And I want both. So I made a compromise. I would go back to pescatarianism and stop using other animal products (e.g. no more leather boots and bags!). When my symptoms look better, I'll start the reintroduction process and legumes will be the first on my list so I can replace seafood.

I guess I can't have everything but I can try my best!

PS. If you want to hear other stories about former vegetarians, check out the book The Autoimmune Solution. This is how I learned about AIP in the first place. The author, Dr. Myers, was vegetarian her whole life before going AIP (she eats meat now). She said that at first it was really hard to eat meat, but eventually it was worth it.

A very in-depth, but accessible book about lupus, as recommended by my rheumatologist:

This one isn't strictly about lupus, but put me on a dietary/lifestyle change path that put my lupus into remission:

This one is also more general to autoimmune diseases, but contains lots of helpful info:
