Everyman s Library
The following are some of my favorite books that I could think of off the top of my head. Hopefully you dig the list.
The Hunger Games. Can I take the trilogy or just the book? If just one I'd take Catching fire (I could explain the first and third well enough).
I'd read to people like it's an autobiography of North America's hero, Katniss. Really mess with some heads.
For your friend: The Border Trilogy. About two cowboys and all the shit they get into when crossing the border
I have the Everyman's Library edition, which has all 3 in a single hardback book. I don't really know much about book collecting or anything, but personally I really like the quality of it.
It's the second book of a trilogy though, it would serve as a stand alone but the other books are worth reading together in my opinion. http://www.amazon.com/The-Border-Trilogy-Crossing-Everymans/dp/0375407936
That's great! I didn't have the same opinion however. I read The Crossing first which was more satisfying for some reason. Still have to get to Cities of the Plain. I wish they weren't published they way they were. Or that I had this edition that has them all together as one big massive McCarthy novel (I wouldn't be surprized if his editor convinced him to release the books seperately):

To me, Suttree is his best. Above Blood Meridian. But for some reason I couldn't get into All The Pretty Horses; I'll have to reread it at some point...the best part to me was the Mexican prison. I wish I knew enough Spanish to understand the dialogue, even though it wasn't very complex.
