For anyone interested in the beginnings of Coffee's appeal in the West, I highly recommend the excellent historical fiction novel The Coffee Trader by David Liss. It follows the attempts of an impoverished Amsterdam Jew attempting to regain his fortunes by navigating the politics of Jewish society in 17th Century Europe and by trading in a mysterious new substance...known as Coffee.

It's a novel about how coffee first came to Europe and was traded as a commodity.
