Islam is a like a badly behaved child that has a really loud piercing scream and most of us just don't want to hear that horrible sound so we prefer to find some justification for doing nothing.

Even if it's under the cover of atheism it's still the same thing. Ignorance and fear. Well justified fear in many cases.

Your point is probably more important than perhaps even you realise.

By failing to see the central role that the cult of martydom and jihad plays in terror attacks like the Boston bombing we're losing the battle on the one arena where we can be sure to win. The arena of ideas.

Edit: Those two guys were college educated, had western friends and had lived in the US for about 8 years.

Not only that we have what should be allies in the Christian world that are being dismissed because of this relativism. As a result someone like Robert Spencer is dismissed by many atheists because he's christian. Nevermind that he's probably the most capable western scholar on Islam.

I find the most opinionated people on this topic have never bothered to read the Koran or study it in any depth. Many of them atheists that claim to be into critical thinking.

I would highly recommend his book The Complete Infidels Guide to the Koran to anyone that wants a deeper understanding of the texts themselves.
