get to know the dealers. Over pay for a piece to get in good with a dealer you like. Over time that dealer will start saving pieces for you to buy. You can get some good stuff that way.
Also, don't judge a wristwatch by its band. Many times, when a solid gold watch's band wears out, jewelers will talk them into a cheaper band that wont wear out so fast as a solid gold one will. So often you can find solid gold watches with crappy bands.
Pocket watches sometimes aren't marked "14k" "18k" since the laws are different in the country of origin. Some companies in the earlier days often had a stamp of a symbol that depicted solid gold or gold filled. Get to know them in the "Complete price guide to Watches" book by Tom Engle. With clean hands, rubbing your fingers on the case and smelling them after will often expose the smell of brass if it's a gold filled case. A solid gold case wont have that smell. Same trick can be used on watch chains. Pocket watch chains often wear, but the clasp itself wears faster and needs replacing from time to time. Much like the watch band trick I told you, chains often get a gold filled replacement claps and therefore the chain will be marked "Gold Filled" instead of "14k" like it should be.
