I think what you are looking for is referred to as a "Cruising Guide". these books give you information about where you can anchor, how to entire a harbor or bay if it's tricky, resources available on shore, how/where to check in via customs and immigration if you're traveling internationally, etc. I've used cruising guides for sailing around the Windward and Leeward islands of the Caribbean, but I'm sure that they exist for other destinations as just searching for cruising guide on amazon returns many hits. I think I've used previous editions of this guide the most. You may also find cruising world (the magazine or website) useful.
