No, we're not.
Skyrim in Australia: $88 at EB Games
Skyrim in America: $59.54 at Amazon
Percentage of yearly income to buy Skyrim in:
Even after adjusting for income discrepancies, Australians pay around 34.7% more than Americans. Don't make blind assumptions because you heard somewhere minimum wage in NSW is $14. Minimum wage does not mean higher income for the average bloke.

Good point. I didn't think about pressure from other online retailers.
On Amazon US, I don't think Skyrim is available for PC download. Its boxed price is $43.99 USD, so there might not be as much pressure here from them to make it lower. And while Steam is available worldwide, its developer Valve is in the US.
I hope I'm wrong. :)
EDIT: I just noticed that Green Man Gaming had Skyrim on sale for $29.98 USD in January. That could have an effect on the Steam sale. I've added this in the self-text above. Thanks, man!
360 Skyrim: $54.79 on amazon.com
PC Skyrim: $43.99 on amazon.com
That's just a very quick search, not including incredibly common Steam sales (one of the major sources of cheap PC games), Skyrim was recently ~$25 new.
Rather pre-order on Amazon and get the nice map.
Well yes that works in theory, but in execution: the boxless, bookless, diskless, versions of COD:MW3 Skyrim and Max Payne 3 are all $60, while the physical versions are the same if not cheaper due to limited shelf space. Granted there is probably some selection bias, these were the three $60 games on the steam storefront.
Yup.
wow damn that's quite a deal. Us here in the US save a godly 45 cents
Actually, I would highly recommend you buy ONE physical copy of a Steamworks game, for example, Skyrim.
If you don't know what a Steamworks game is, it's a system Steam implemented that reassures you that no matter where you buy the game, it'll have a Steam key attached to it. All retail copies of Steamworks games(except a very few) come with a Steam key.
The reason I suggest buying a physical Steamworks game is because if your account ever gets stolen, hacked, etc. you can take a picture of your physical CD key with your email address written on a piece of paper next to it and send it to Steam support and they'll know you are the rightful owner of the account. This is one of the few things that make Steam support know you're the real owner of the account and things will get done A LOT faster.
You only need one game though, Portal 2 is another example. Here is the complete list of games that use Steamworks, you can see if it has a retail version on the right side.
Of course this is only if you are going to be using Steam. You can also buy games from Origin(EA games mostly), GreenManGaming(usually gives you a Steam key 99% of the time), GoodOldGames(DRM free games, usually older titles from the 90's) and the HumbleIndieBundle(DRM free and sometimes gives you Steam keys if you spend over $1).
You just can't use it at the same time. Give it away and you give away the code too. I'm talking about giving it away not sharing it. If I were to never play a game again I could give it to you no problem. I'm not talking about on Steam or anything, I'm talking about owning the discs. A simple search on Amazon reveals dozens of 'used' pc games - including WoW. Here's many used copies of Skyrim - http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B004HYIAPM/ref=sr_1_16_up_0_olp?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1370971223&sr=1-16&condition=used
> The only way you can buy it is from Steam.

You can buy a boxed copy too though Skyrim uses Steamworks so you'll still need to be logged into Steam at least once to play. And you can mod with either the retail or Steam versions.
Steam Workshop and Nexus Mods will work, even both together. But for stability sake, stick with one or the other. Preferably the Nexus for the better manager and manual mod updates.
I think Steam is doing a great thing these days (I used to hate it as well) by putting on great sales. Things like that really do stop piracy.
My main thing is, I don't care how many times it's said, the prices of games is unreasonable these days. Plain and simple. "If you can't afford $50-60 for a game, you shouldn't be playing it" is the common response I see on reddit, which is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard, and 9 out of 10 time's it's coming from the voice of people still living with their parents, or single guys with nothing else to spend their money on. Me and the wife make pretty damn good money, but I'm sure as hell not going to budget in a $50 fuckin video game that I will play for a few hours and never again.
So what is to be done about it? PUT SALES ON GAMES THAT ARE ALREADY MAKING MILLIONS IN PROFIT.
Why not put them on sale within a few weeks of coming out? Games like Skyrim are already garunteed to make a shit ton of money, so I don't see why more "blockbuster" hits aren't cheaper quicker.
Edit: Skyrim is still $60 on amazon ($48 for pc, most likely because of, well...pirates)
It's cheaper at Amazon for everyone but Americans.
Not 66% off but 50%. I waited so long and then I did this. Some major retailors honor online price match. Best Buy is one of them. If you have a best buy, Fryes or another company near you that does online price matching. Show them this.

Oh and by the way, congrats on finishing your exams!
You can currently get it from this seller on amazon who has very good feedback and is about $7 off the lowest price ever. Or here's a good place to track prices. You're welcome
I think the only two strong counterexamples you have there are Portal 2 and Skyrim.
Dragon Age: Origins had far less hype and fewer expectations than Dragon Age 2, although the reviews for that game are very flatly mediocre -- no signs of a giant 1-star outrage.
Saints Row has 60 reviews. It was obviously not very much anticipated or talked abut.
Anyway, at least link the actual Skyrim PC page, not the Collector's Edition that costs $150. http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-V-Skyrim-Pc/dp/B004HYIAPM/ref=sr_1_1_title_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1342138057&sr=1-1&keywords=skyrim
It still supports your case, even though there is a spike in 1-star reviews relative to 3- and 2-star values.
Went down to $34.99 on Amazon

>Or for another example I couldn't get into Skyrim and barely managed to play enough to beat the main storyline. Does that mean the game isn't worth 60 bucks?
Skyrim costs $22.95 if SoT costs $30 no one would be complaining.
>My point was all games aren't for all people.
My point is that no one is arguing that all games should be for all people and thus your statement is irrelevant to the discussion being had.
>Off topic- Why so angry? What compelled you to come at me with such vitriol? Seriously man it's a game. Take a breath.
Always strikes me as weird when people post things like this - I'm not mad or angry in the least - what would give you that idea? The use of bold? It's literally the addition of two asterisks on either side of your typing... I assure you, I'm not mad, and there's no vitriol in my post (so sensitive, geeze...)
I think it's pretty clear you'd enjoy the game regardless if they charged $150 or $10. Good for you. I think this sub, and the general reception of the game (a simple google search will show you) have shown that Rare has made some serious design and business mistakes.
If people like you want to continue to support that, go for it, who am I to tell you what to do with your money? Where I feel you miss the mark is not accepting that you are in the vast minority in feeling this way, and that if you continue to be such a minority of the market, the game you cherish will surely go the way of Lawbreakers, Battleborn, or D2.
I suggest you take a step back and reassess how much you are concerned about the perceived anger of other posters and focus on what can and should be done to fix the game you and others so vehemently defend.
