Mods please flog me if I'm in the wrong in outing her, but the lady in question is Sam Maggs. And in my 15 minutes of research, she's a poseur. In This Interview she boasts that her parents watched Star Wars a bunch and got into SG-1 at some point. Speaking from experience Star Wars is not absorbed in utero. SG-1 is okay.

Her main claim to fame, The Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy, is a Tumblrina starter kit. Supernatural, Dr. Who, and Sherlock. The rest is a boring repeated rehash of what all fandoms have accepted over the past 40 years. Don't be a redshirt, Jar-Jar sucks, oh look I didn't care about ASOIAF until it was on HBO.

The only reason anyone cares about her is that she wrote a book patronizing the millions of girls who actually grew up loving video games and sci-fi and fantasy books. She's talking down to those women who took a risk and embraced what is now considered mainstream culture.

I did some google searches. You know how many references I found matching Sam Maggs and Ursula DeGuin? Zero. Sam Maggs and Anne McCaffrey? Zero. This google search is just kinda funny to me with McCaffrey's name slashed out.

This woman is a nobody. She rode falsely upon nerd culture and monetized it once she found it convenient. She is a stain.

Honestly, you can have both. You will learn to have a bit of chill and spend time with your SO, and to have time to fan girl alone or with friends. He should respect your hobbies and interests just as you'll need to respect his. I'm 32, getting married in 6 months, and still make time for fanfic and going to concerts with my friends. I keep my screeching and flailing for twitter.

I highly recommend this book! as a good starting point on how to indulge your fangirliness while learning how to adult.
