I’ve read a fair amount of books on the studio era, but none have lived up to the brilliant “The Genius of the System”

www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0816670102/ref=redir_mdp_mobile "the Genius in the System". It's sort of a history of the Golden age of the Hollywood system and an apologia for what outsiders hate about it.

The Genius of the System by Thomas Schatz touches on a similar topic.

I'm just using it in the sense denoting Hollywood's most dominant era, described as the 1920s-1940s in Thomas Schatz's famous book The Genius of the System. It doesn't mean that the films were better then, only that the studio system was at its most prosperous(before the advent of TV).
