Cannot overstate how incredible The Golden Spruce by John Vaillant is. It dives deep into the story about this tree and the man who cut it down and is on the same level as Into the Wild, if not better.

I am actually well schooled on BC history, and I would recommend a few books by historians and anthropologists.

One interesting book about logging industries interactions with the FNs is about the destruction of The Golden Spruce by loggers, which goes a long way to show the ways in which europeans caused destruction to sacred areas and items: https://www.amazon.ca/Golden-Spruce-Story-Madness-Greed/dp/0676976468

Another is about slavery among FNs in BC, which details the history and cultural significance of the practices in the northwest. https://www.amazon.com/Aboriginal-Slavery-Northwest-Coast-America/dp/0520206169

While it's about Haida Gwaii and the logging industry in BC, The Gold Spruce is a fascinating read.

Good read on our avarice and greed here about logging and resource extraction in Canada

From the age of the forest around it, that tree was probably felled 60-80 years ago. Stumps like this are commonplace in the PNW, where early industrialized forestry chewed through 95% of the original old growth. I rode my bike past a dozed such tombstones this afternoon. Applying a modern 'morality' to the past makes about as much sense as shooting the messenger. It is what it is and all we can do is be better in the future. Read the Golden Spruce.

There used to be a golden spruce on Haida Gwaii... until a disgruntled logger chopped it down. There's a book about the whole thing which I hear is quite interesting.

To really get a grip on the historical significance, in terms of both human and biological history, of this region, I'd really recommend a fucking great book that's a super easy and interesting read:
