In his fantastic opus The Great Big Book of Horrible Things Matthew White places the Atlantic Slave Trade solidly in the middle of the pack....something like the the 40s or some such. World War II is placed at number one overall. Though of course Japan gets to share some of that blame with Germany. And I guess Italy, too. Whatever.

Then again, America gets to share the blame for the Atlantic slave trade with the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, and Brazil....to name just a few. So maybe it all balances out.

When I read articles like this, I always get one of two images in my mind. The friendlier one is of some kind of Evangelical tent revival, with a wild-eyed preacher exhorting the crowd, "do you renounce Satan and all his works? I say....I say.....I say.....DO YOU RENOUNCE SATAN AND ALL HIS WORKS??????" The less friendly image that comes to mind is the "meetings" during the Cultural Revolution in China, often at universities, where faculty members were "invited" to renounce their reactionary and evil capitalist ways.
