When I first heard they were doing this, I hoped it was based off The Last Days of Krypton, by Kevin J. Anderson. One of the best portrayals of Krypton in my opinion. Too bad this will be nothing like that.

Not too sure about comics but there's a really good book called The Last Days of Krypton that chronicles those events.
His novel Last Days of Krypton is also great. It's a Superman book not about Superman.
If you're looking for some novels, these are excellent reads:
The Last Days of Krypton by Kevin J. Anderson This, for obvious reasons, doesn't have Superman in it, but it is an excellent in depth look at Krypton's final days.
Enemies & Allies by Kevin J. Anderson Batman and Superman go up against Lex Luthor and the Soviets during the Cold War.
The Death and Life of Superman by Roger Stern I haven't read this one in years but, from what I can remember, it's a novelization of the comics leading up to Superman's death and his "resurrection".
The Science of Superman by Mark Wolverton Although, technically not a Superman story, it's an excellent read on how Superman's powers could exist in the real world.
