I commend the historical curiosity, I also would like to see the decades long collapse of the Western Roman Empire for example, or the fall of the Ming, but as the events are still in recent memory (two generations removed) I have a more nightmarish vision of what happened.
The events I'm refering are the fall of Catalonia in the spanish civil war, my grandma lived through it and also other members of my family and it was a real hell. I know re-living history has a strong appeal, but imagine you live in a democracy (a democracy such as it existed in the 1930's) and you have a fascist army closing in, they are openly saying, like the mongol hordes of old that they will "burn, rape and murder" anyone they get their hands on. Not fun. Imagine that the consequences of losing a war were losing your right to vote for men and women, the right of women to work (they would need a "legal tutor" like in Saudi Arabia), losing freedom of movement, also divorce is made illegal, extramarital sex is made illegal, the public education back in the hands of the catholic church (strong corporal punishment and touchy touchy priests), no trade unions, no right of assembly, no freedom of the press, etcetc. Imagine all that is coming and you are powerless to stop it. Imagine then that this goes on for 40 years and then it doesnt even end like commuism in eastern europe and the fall of the soviet union but merely transforms... more or less my family and many other's experience
if you want some more details you have this book, it's a hard read, at least I found myself too emotionally involved to finish it
