Investopedia is a great resource. I use it often. I also recently read this book and I quite liked it.

Amazon - The Visual Investor: How to Spot Market Trends

  1. Friends at work
  2. I started with 1k and add to my account monthly
  3. When I started I was screening for stocks around the $2 to $3 range
  4. I usually buy 100 shares per transaction
  5. My trading frequency varies, monthly to quarterly

  6. a. I usually do not buy any less than 100 shares to keep the buy & sell transactions fees from adding too much to the cost basis

    b. Once when using my virtual account in OptionsHouse I bought some stock in after market and didn't notice the ask/bid spread. Oops, glad I did that in the virtual account.

    c. I bought into a low cost bio-tech, Discovery Labs (DSCO) just before Surfaxin's PDUFA date and FDA approval without doing much due diligence. I didn't lose anything since I got out in the last throws of the hype but it was still a lesson learned. On the other hand I bought ACAD around $2.40 and held for a while, lost patience and sold, then it took off a few months later. In any event I tend to stay away from low cost bio-techs now.

    d. Another book I read recently which isn't bad and has some good advice. Amazon - The Little Book of Behavioral Investing: How not to be your own worst enemy

    c. From the book above and many other references listen to your rational brain and ignore your emotional brain.
