This will help. I have my own copy at home, and I can now solve a cube in about 3-5 minutes. I'd probably be faster if I practiced more.

Ok, so here's the story. I was in the family room playing with it. It was my turn. My sister and brother were also trying to solve it. Note, this is when it first came out in the 80s, and we had it shortly after it went on sale. This book hadn't been written, much less published yet. Dad was on the ottoman sitting in front of the TV as he usually did, and mom was on the couch reading something (probably TV Guide).

So I'm like... I'm going to go to the bathroom and work on it. I was in there for an unusually long time. When I came out ... SOLVED! It took my brother about 3 minutes to realize that the stickers were off center, at an angle, and had air bubbles in them (I was 10 and working from a toilet).

My dad had some weird shit fit about how I may have broke it and I ruined it, maybe I broke it, and that I pissed money away. (They were still pretty rare then too, because they were the a huge fad at the time)

But to get to your original point - yes I would have picked the cubes apart but I was afraid it'd crack it and then it really would have been broken.

Also, we don't keep screwdrivers in the toilet and I'd gotten smart enough that if I went to the garage to take a screwdriver into the toilet it would have aroused suspicions.

I had this book as a kid. This was at the height of the Rubik's Cube craze. Other kids brought their cubes into school so I could solve it for them. I was a king for that one day in first grade.
