More Maryland than Baltimore, but check out The Sot Weed Factor. Historical fiction set in 17th century Maryland.

How about something somewhat tobacco related?

The Sot-Weed Factor, by John Barth

Possibly the funniest book I've ever read. It concerns the adventures a poet named Ebenezer Cooke and his misadventures in the New World. It is a vicious parody of historical novels and the plot is indescribable. Twists and turns everywhere and Ebenezer struggles to preserve his virginity. The book is dirty, offensive, and you will never look at an eggplant in the same way.

The twist: there really was a historical figure named Ebenezer Cooke who really did write a poem titled, "The Sot-Weed Factor." So the book is slightly historical. But it's a hoot. It's hilarious, ribald, and you never know what is going to happen or who someone might turn out to be.

I don't have a +. That's OK, I have plenty of cigars. However, I really do want you to read this book! If you do, I'd like you to start another thread and recommend it.

The Sot Weed Factor by John Barth. We were supposed to be reading The Martian Chronicles but I had already read it so my English teacher gave me a copy of his favorite book, maybe as a challenge since it was 800 pages. It definitely gave me the confidence to tackle other large novels like Les Miserables and The Stand.
