I think this ignores that the "massive land grab" was an impressive piece of operational art that the Soviet armies were able to pull off. It required extensive planning and training, and they were careful to tailor their forces to suit the local conditions in the regions they attacked into.

Maybe you didn't mean it to sound like hand-waving, but that is how it came across. An attack of this scale doesn't happen overnight.
