I hear you. I basically do the same thing but with a spatty, which can be cleaned and reused. They're handy for serums (when a dropper doesn't quite reach the last bit), conditioner (when you don't feel like wasting several minutes in the shower for gravity to help you out), etc.
I've been using Hourglass Immaculate foundation off and on for a while (they changed it from a pump to a tube recently). It seems like the damn pump clogged up after just a few uses. It's so annoying. For a freakin' $56 product you'd think they'd be able to get somewhat decent packaging. The spatty (or q-tip) method solves that easily.

I got these spatulas to help with getting more product out of containers that can't be cut or squeezed!
$7 for stainless steel + plate, or silicone (currently looks out of stock at the moment, but I'd keep an eye out). Otherwise, I've heard good things about elf's mask brush. Just throwing some options out there, I'd google "beauty spatula" for some results :)
