Not sure how he actually got the card into the orange, other than planting it there beforehand. However, magicians use subconscious cues in their words to sort of "plant" thoughts into their subject's heads. It's called neuro-linguistic programming. My guess is that Blaine used NLP to plant the 9 of Hearts into Ford's mind. Ford assumed his selection of that specific card was random or unique, when Blaine led him to select that card off camera. Psychodrama was invented by psychotherapist Jacob Moreno. This looks like a decent compendium if you are into origins:

The Essential Moreno: Writings on Psychodrama, Group Method, and Spontaneity

It was perfected by Friedrich (or Fritz) Perls who trained in Freudian psychoanalysis and was a theater director before he became a therapist. He gave many of the most popular seminars at Esalen for several years and LaVey (who I have not read) could have picked it up almost by osmosis in San Francisco in the late 1960's. At his peak Perls was something of a rock star therapist.

The most direct relation to magic was done by a couple of guys from UC Santa Cruz, Grinder and Bandler.

The Structure of Magic, Vol. 1: A Book About Language and Therapy

The early Neurolinguistic Programming books by Grinder and Bandler are excellent sources for psychodrama, hypnosis, psychotherapy, and magic. It is a pity what happened to them. It's all complete shit now.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a very advanced therapy program.
The books on how to be an NLP therapist, like any other academic books, can be found on amazon.
They are very interesting, funny, and entertaining, as they sort of use their therapy trickery to trick you into being a therapist minded person.
I would offer the books to your child and read them yourself.
This is higher level, complex hypnosis. Tell your child that. Who doesn't want to learn how to hypnotize each other?
This all sounds weird right? Ok. When a parent and child clash, they often try to sway each other to certain mindsets, and battle against each others' mind sets, right? In essence, you are already doing this. The books will educate you on how to do it in a more useful way.
I am very grateful for these books and so is my 6 figure earning daughter who used to be quite wild and whatnot.
All of this school of hypnosis, unlike clinical hypnosis, is based around what is ''useful and appropriate'' to the person considering what is useful and appropriate for them. Training the mind to reflect on what is best for one's self, not stiff psychological programming.
You can even go to a reputable NLP Psychologist, AFTER reading the first book. They will be impressed, and you'll receive a better level of care.
Feel free to check out whatever the web has to offer about NLP.
First book to read: https://www.amazon.com/Frogs-into-Princes-Linguistic-Programming/dp/0911226192
I swear it'sBook 2: a fun read. Just keep going if you don't get everything. It will still have lots of entertainment value.
Book 2/3: These seminal works in neurolinguistic programming (NLP) help therapists understand how people create inner models of the world to represent their experience and guide their behavior. Volume I describes the Meta Model, a framework for comprehending the structure of language; Volume II applies NLP theory to nonverbal communication.

The covers are goofy. The books are amazing.
NLP is not about dragging a client through their past and what they've done and why, and ''how did that make you feel'' bullshit.
It is all about being stronger at being more ''useful'' and ''appropriate'' to yourself.
The way you see fit, with an ever expanding set of tools.
NOT ''when you got in trouble, how did that make you feel. You did wrong, did you understand that? Do you get what you have done? How do you feel? How does your mother make you feel. How did this make you feel, how did that make you feel. Lets talk about.......... blah blah blah''
Learning tools to be useful to yourself is awesome. I used to sell books for a living, and would rejoice at finding these rare unspoken of hypnosis books, as they fetch big bucks.

It sure helped me, the LSD casualty, suicidal freak.
Youtube is literally stuffed to the brim with NLP videos.
Book 3 is a bit tricky, but still fun.

The first editions are over $2000! Whoa.
See what I mean about rejoicing when I found them? Psychologist estate sales are goldmines.
Here are the therapists. Pick a very well educated one.

Attend seminars on hypnosis. Maybe your child would enjoy that.
Every adult at a training session, upon learning your child has even read one chapter of a book, will be positive reinforcement boons beyond measure. They will offer praise and support.
Every ''positive power'' program is honestly just boiled down NLP.
Many make money off of the game, distorting the methods to suit their scams.
Tony Robbins is a prime example. He was an NLP trainer and then went for the scam money. http://www.trainingzone.co.uk/community/blogs/rcl/nlp-is-dead

Real therapy that helps people, doesn't keep them coming back to give money to the shitty therapist every week. The shitty therapist wants that money every week, more than they want to help, in many cases. No one understands ''the mind'' of a human. They are pretending.
Someone who offers more tools to be a better you the way you want top do it, is opening pathways, not pondering and talking about feelings.
