Penguin Classics actually published the two Viking sagas about their travels to Vinland. I recently read them, and each of the sagas contains some information about Erik the Red, who founded the first Norse settlement in Greenland. One of them is actually titled "Eric's Saga."

We think he was probably called "the Red" because of the color of his hair and beard. His son Leif Ericson went to Vinland (almost certainly northern Newfoundland or Labrador).

Here is a link to the sagas on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/The-Vinland-Sagas-Penguin-Classics/dp/0140447768 They would be a good place to start.

Well the Poetic Edda would be where you start. It's all the stories of the norse mythology. I bought two transcripts of two texts that were written in old icelandic and in arabic. Book 1 was about the discovery of Vinland (North America) by the vikings. Book 2 one is about an Arab who wrote down what he saw when he met Vikings. This is the only detailed account that we have about a viking burial.

I recommend them very highly, but the Poetic Edda would be what you're looking for ;)

What you'd probably want specifically is to look for a translation of the vinland sagas, which have to do with the first viking settlement of the west, in Newfoundland. This is probably a good place to start.

BAM!

The story is mainly in from The Saga of the Greenlanders but The Saga of Eric the Red is also relevant. Both are translated in the book I've linked.
