Lesbian/Queer main characters:
Batwoman - She's a lesbian and her romantic relationships play a fairly important role in the series. Her villains are a bit B-list but they're enjoyable reads never the less. Some controversy over DC's decision to prohibit her "happiness" and troubles with the talented creative staff that are worth investigating beforehand but it's worth noting that these issues do not effect the trade paperbacks 1-3. Don't make my mistake and accidentally buy Batgirl comics and wonder when she's supposed to start kissing ladies.
Lumberjanes - The trade paperback is supposed to come out some time next year but individual issues are currently being published. All ages comic that portrays a scout type group at a summer camp full of monsters. I'm not personally reading it but I've heard nothing but good things.
Funhome - A proper "graphic novel." An unbelievably intelligent and nuanced perspective on gender and sexuality. Bechdel compares her coming out process against her late father's closeted homosexuality to draw an intimate but calculated portrait of American sexuality and family.

Saga - Holy shit, I can't recommend this enough. So utterly fantastic that words fail me. I buy this for everyone I know who's even faintly interested in comics.
The Walking Dead - The queer characters don't show up for a long while but this is the series the very popular TV show is based on. It's a little "Drama-y" for me but my girlfriend's dad gobbles them up like there's no tomorrow.
Not queer but awesome:
Chew - A world where poultry is outlawed and people have superpowers only related to food. My mom called it "kind of weird" which it is. I can't get enough.
Revival - The dead come to life but they're mostly just cranky, okay, sometimes murderous, but not that often. Strong female protagonists.

I know this isn't a novel, but The Walking Dead comics are a great zombie read.
The cheapest legal way to read them is by purchasing Compendium One, Two and Three. That's the first 144 issues. Probably best to start with just Compendium One to ensure you like them.

The Walking Dead is actually really easy to get into because it is only one series. You can start at #1 and read up to the current issue. The best and cheapest way you can do this would be to buy the two Walking Dead compendium that have been released. They go from #1-96 and they're around $35-40 each.

I actually always do that, if the files are available, and if I start reading it and enjoy it, I purchase the actual physical book, as I did with all of the GoT and TWD books. I just finished the first compendium. It is amazing. So much happens and it is not like the show at all. The characters are better, the action is super intense, and you dont have to wait an entire season for something to happen. Every three pages some shit goes down.
Dont buy it in a book store. It's $60. On amazon it's $35. I got lucky and got it for $30 last year.
If you like the first few, please considering supporting the author by buying the books.

Ok well I'll try to give you a few series
Invincible. Really great superhero story by the guy that makes The Walking Dead if you've heard of that. Probably the best superhero book out there. (You can buy the compendium, the first 47 issues for like $40 on amazon). It's up to around 90 issues now.
Y the Last Man (10 volumes, complete. Its amazing. It's a comic where seemingly every man in the world except our hero has died. He tries to get to a lab in California to help find a cure for the disease that killed all the men and...etc)
I don't know much Fantasy...check out Demon Knights, volume 1 from DC comics is an ongoing series. Volume 1 (the first 7 comics) should be out in July. Sorry about the long wait :l
You can also check out the Walking Dead if you like zombies? Compendium gets you...maybe the first 60 issues I think? Its up to 94 now

The Walking Dead - Compendium 1 Pros - absolute cheapest method on a per-issue basis, only one book to worry about instead of multiple copies. Cons - Only released every 48 issues, so you get 1-48 but the next compendium won't come out for at least six more months as they just hit issue 90, so you'd be waiting a long time for the next group.
Trade Paperbacks
Pro's - still a better value than buying individually, released every six issues instead of every 48 so much, much greater frequency, if you have a book shelf having a bunch of these lined up on it looks "cooler" in my opinion.
Con's - more expensive per issue than the Compendium, still only comes out every six issues so can leave large gaps.
You could spend $18 for every 12 issues - or get the 6 issue trades for about $8-9 each...or...
Or you could buy compendium #1, and get the first 48 issues for $39. Save yourself about $33.

There is a link to the first compendium which includes the first 8 volumes containing issues 1-48. These, because they are collections of the volumes themselves, are a bit more expensive but give you more for your dollar and take it from my experience, the walking dead is a marathon book. You dont want to have to wait for the next one.
You'll be able to find the collections much cheaper on eBay/Amazon Marketplace than the individual issues - the early ones go for a pretty penny now.
There is also a Compendium of the first 50 issues which is pretty good value.

Those two will catch you up through issue #96. You can either wait until Compendium 3 comes out in a year or so or buy the trades starting with Vol. 17. The trades collect 6 issues and come out a couple of times a year.

There are a lot of differences between the show and comic and is a different experience altogether.

This is half of the series for only 35$. If you have Amazon Prime/Student, shipping is free. It would be 80$ to get the individual volumes that add up to the same amount of material.
Unfortunately, there is no second compendium yet, so you'll have to go the expensive route to buy the others. Do remember, though, that some libraries carry graphic novels, and that most bookstores will allow you to read their content in-stores without buying it. Since graphic novels read fast, this is a good way to get through material.
You have three options:
It all comes down to what kind of book or reading experience you're looking for. The TPB is light and easy to carry around if you're looking to read while traveling or while lying up-side down. The hardcover is nice and durable you're looking for something that won't risk getting damaged easy. The Compendium gives you the best bang for your buck, but it's quite bulky.
(I've thought about getting some Walking Dead books too, so this is the kind of decision I'm battling with)

How much are you willing to spend? There are about 150 issues total and the show is about to hit the arc that starts around issue #100. There are three compendiums out that collect 48 issues each. If you want a solid chunk of TWD to get the juices flowing, you'd save even more money by going the compendium route.
The first one is going for $36 on Amazon and it collects #1-48. About $0.75 per issue. If you like/love that, you could either continue collecting the compendiums (and have to wait about four years for the next compendium to come out, since TWD is usually on a 12-issues-per-year schedule except for a few events in the past that had an issue every two weeks), or you could start collecting the trades going forward and eventually pick up the trades that were in compendium one. It's up to you.

If you're willing to spend ≈$30 on The Walking Dead based only on recommendations, then go ahead and do so.
If you prefer reading a book before buying it, or not buying books at all, your local library will mostly likely have The Walking Dead in some form stocked, provided your town isn't extremely small. (That's how I got into it—my high school had them.)
If you're wishing to remain unspoiled, stop after reading Compendium 2, Book 8, Volume 16, or Issue 96 (all line up with "Knots Untie" AKA S06E11.)
Reading further will spoil upcoming episodes.

They usually bunch comic books into trade paperbacks which are about 6 issues each. I assume you're not interested in them for collecting reasons, so I would suggest ordering The Walking Dead Compendium 1, which covers all the way until the end of the prison arc. Then if you want continue you can order Compendium 2, which covers the story to most likely the end of season 5.
From there you will have to start buying smaller collected editions to continue, starting with the Deluxe Edition vol. 9.

There is 22 volumes of the graphic novel currently (the graphic novels contain 6 issues of the comic per book, there are also hardcovers which contain 12 issues, and the compendiums contain 48 issues).
If you're like me and prefer physical media you can also get them on Amazon.
Here's the first compendium. It's huge and contains a whole collection of the comics (I think it's issues 1-49, but I could be wrong). Amazon also sells the second compendium, and soon there will be a third. You could also buy the comics in volume collections, which are smaller and easier to handle, but they cost more than the compendiums.

I personally would recommend you pick up the comic from issue one. With compendium 1 and read the entire series.
The story is different enough that you will still be surprised by a lot of the story. Additional, Kirkman writes many of his surprises after a page turn, so you never see it coming.
I have reread the series from issue one twice now, I have single issues since 78 I think, picked up the earlier issues via compendiums.
90-110 is an incredible run with the introduction of the saviors and Negan. Issue #161 just came out on Wednesday and the story telling is still so strong.

Depends on what his tastes tend towards - my nephew was pretty thrilled with Bone (this one might be a bit young for your nephew's tastes - I think it's geared towards the 10-12 demographic), The Walking Dead (I always buy the compendiums, I like to devour as much as possible all at once - but if you're not sure he'd like it, I'd start with just one or two volumes), and this year I've gotten him East of West.
Chew is a really neat series as well, although I haven't tested it out on my nephew yet - I think it might be a bit too old for him.
I also liked Iron West if you want to go with a one-off instead of a series.
Depending on his parents, I'd check to see if they consider the Walking Dead and/or Chew to be age appropriate or not. I haven't read through East of West yet, but it's rated for mature teens so should be in the ballpark for your nephew.

Cheaper than an eighth.
2 weeks ago a bought Compendium 1 and could not put it down. I read the entire thing in two sittings. I would always recommend starting from the beginning as it lets you get a proper feel for the tone of the comics compared to the show. There's a lot that is the same but an equal amount that is different.

Best bang for your buck if you are short on cash. Amazon ships everywhere. $35-$40 total for the first 48 issues. It's a steal and the perfect jumping on point on a budget.
Please don't torrent it. I may get hate for this, but I think we should be showing our appreciation to Kirkman for what he is doing. Torrenting music or movies from large industries is one thing; they don't need the extra 99 cents. But Kirkman is just one comic book writer with a brilliant story. If you can afford it, please buy the compendium.

Walking Dead Compendium One from kirakaydawn's wishlist (yeah you!). This is one of my favorite comics and you really should get it. It sucked me in and had me emotional over the characters.
I don't know anything about you, but from the looks of your reddit history, you're 21 (i think), you have a best friend named Emma, and you're an aussie. Wow that sounds creepy.

Here's a list of the New 52. Each week there will be about 10-15 new books being released in September (protip: go to your lcbs and there is a free book of the New 52 with every series being released, some art, and a synopsis of each new book. There's also each release date within).

Anyway, I'd suggest you pick up Justice League of America as well. It's coming out Aug. 31st and is the inaugural book for the new 52 relaunch.
One last thing, go to your comic shop asap and add whatever titles you want to your pull list. If you don't have one, find a comic shop that does pull lists (or pull boxes) for their customers. Most should. (a pull list basically when you want to "subscribe" to a comic, they reserve you a copy and put in your 'pull box' when it's released. It also gives the shop a better gauge on how many books to order of each series each month).

No comic is weekly, that's a shit load of work. Each series will be monthly. But then again, you never know. Uncanny X-Force was bi-weekly for a while, but then you have Millar's Kick Ass 2 which has been out for almost a year and isn't even on issue 3 yet (really pisses a lot of fans off).
Also, since you're new to comics, I cannot stress to you enough how important it is that you start reading Walking Dead. I don't care what excuses you may have for not reading it yet (if any), put those sorry's in a sack and start reading it. Here's a link to the first 48 issues in a massive compendium.

For Brits, The Walking Dead Compendium (collecting #1-48) is already on a pretty good price on amazon - all that zombie goodness for only £25.79.

After watching the first season I also, jumped into the books. I would highly recommend starting with The compendium. It collects the first 48 issues for only $35 on amazon. That's $0.73 per issue. Versus hopping on at the current spot for $2.99 per issue. This is an absolute no brainer. This will give you hours of entertainment cheaply, and you'll know whether you want to continue the series after reading it. Honestly, you're not to far behind to catch up. Walking Dead is a very quick read. I'm talking like 8-10 minutes per issue. So that's like 21 hours to read all the way up to the current issue.
There's really not a lot I'd recommend not starting at the beginning for...for the Walking Dead, pick up the first compendium, as someone already stated. Lots to read! Here it is. It collects the first eight volumes. It's hard to beat the value considering the first 8 volumes, new, would be around $100.

It depends. The tv show definitely follows the overall plot of the comics like the path of the group from Atlanta to the prison, to Alexandria and so on. The tv show adds sometimes major plot points in that are not in the comics (won't say which exactly, you can ask about those).
The characters are partly the same but there are cases in which characters act completely different compared to their counterpart in the comics. And/or they die in different ways (or not at all) in the comics.
Lately, the comics have been following the comics very closely. There were moments or episodes in the TV show that resembled parts of the comic but these past 4 episodes were really close to the comics (and other stuff this season which I won't spoil for you either).
All in all I really recommend you to read the comics. I was in the same situation as you and decided to go for it.
The best way to read the comics would be to buy the compendiums; there are currently 2 of them. They are by far the cheapest way to read the comic.
Compendium 1 ends with the fall of the prison. The tv show is about halfway through compendium 2. I suggest you to buy compendium 1 (see here) and then decide whether you want to read past the current story line in the show.

Kirkman is the author of the comic. He also writes Invincible, which is up there for Favorite Superhero Comic Ever in my book.
It's not a matter of explaining things better - the books are pretty wildly different. The VERY broad strokes are there (Rick wakes in a hospital, finds his family, camp outside Atlanta, farm, prison...), but characters are omitted and added, and others die way earlier or way later than they do in the source material. Characterizations and relationships change, and overall they just do some things that will never, ever be okay on any TV network short of HBO.
If you have curiosity and a little money to burn, you can't go very wrong with getting the first four years of this book, sight unseen.

I'm sure you can buy them in comic stores, but I got them from Amazon. There are $35 books that combine 48 issues, so ~$0.73/each, but then you have to buy the individual issues for more recent stuff which is what pushes the price up.
The first 144 issues add up to $99.83 on Amazon, in three big fat 1000+ page volumes. Then there are 18 recent issues not in any collection that cost $5-6 each, so it adds up to about $200 for the full series. And if you're cool reading on a tablet, the Kindle editions are significantly cheaper.
So, this series is mentioned a lot, but try The Walking Dead. If you watch Breaking Bad, you probably have seen the show as well. The comics are much better.
Typical people thrown into zombie apocalypse. Rick "Family Man" Grimes has to keep his family and the others safe from zombies and other people.
The best "bang for your buck" would be The Walking Dead Compendium on amazon. $30 for 8 volumes in one nice, easy to store book. Usually one volume is $15. You do the math.
And as stated earlier, check out Criminal by Ed Brubaker, or anything by Ed Brubaker. He is my favorite writer in comics, and he writes a lot of crime based comics

3 are out there so far, each containing 48 chapters, so that's 144 chapters. Right now chapter 184 is the most recent one, so it's going to be a while until compendium 4 comes out. I guess, if you plan on buying the next compendium, it'd be "okay" to read the chapters somewhere online until you can buy them, if you can't wait. At least that's what I'd do.

Deadly Class - This is probably my favorite book being put out right now.
Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis - I'm currently rereading this run and it is even better than I remember. One of the definitive runs for one of the best characters the big 2 have produced.
The Walking Dead - I don't know about you, but I love zombies and this probably the best zombie story I have ever read.
Batman: Black Mirror - This actually has Dick Greyson as Batman instead of Bruce Wayne, but it is a great read.
Batman Court of the Owl - This is where you want to start if you want to read New 52 Batman Snyder, who also wrote Black Mirror, has had a great run on the series.
Annihilation - Starts a truly epic run of stories on the cosmic side of the Marvel universe. Unfortunately the physical copies are stupidly expensive, but if you don't mind reading digitally you should check it out.
This is just off the top of my head and I'm sure others, with more knowledge, can help more. Are there any characters or geners you particularly enjoy?
if you want a simple but really good story try 'the killing joke' by alan moore. That comic is pretty much universally loved and alan moore is a complete genius. Another amazing piece by Alan Moore is watchmen. (im sure youve heard of it or seen the movie, if not, what?) but it is amazingly written and illustrated. Those are both dc. if you want something not marvel or DC i would highly recommend the walking dead. if your interested dont get the single issues are anything. get the compendium because it is more bang for your buck. compendium is 60 in stores and 35 on amazon.
another really fun and well put together series is scott pilgram. there are 6 volumes that range around 10 dollars each for the paper back. altogether a great story. the art work isnt my favorite but it is a little better in the colored version AKA the hard cover version. if you saw the movie and thought "meh it wasnt the best so i wont read the comics." 1) the movie is freaking great and 2) the movie doesnt really follow the books considering that volume 6 was written after the movie was made.
But yeah those are my thoughts. i could go into alot more but the ones i gave are quite a lot!! hope this is helpful!!

First of all, welcome! In regards to your Walking Dead question, it's a self-contained, on-going series that you can start from the beginning. Your cheapest option to start reading it would be the compendiums.

The first issues are selling for hundreds of dollars (#1 selling for over $1000). The hard cover books (combined issues) are selling for about $20-$30 per book (I think there are 7).

There are elements that are the same, but there are already some major deviations from the comics in the show. Many of the characters in the group did not appear in the comics (notably Daryl). The CDC plot line and its implications are not in the comics either.
That being said there are some similarities. The ending of tonights episode did happen in the comics, so anyone who has read them has a pretty good idea what's going to happen.
Based on everything I've seen and heard from the creators/producers, I would say read the comics for sure, they are fantastic (they actually got me hooked on comics in general). There may be some things that are less shocking or suspenseful, but by and large the show is progressing differently than the comics.
