The cheapest legal way to read them is by purchasing Compendium One, Two and Three. That's the first 144 issues. Probably best to start with just Compendium One to ensure you like them.

*Edit: The Comics FAQ can probably answer any additional questions you may have.

The Walking Dead is actually really easy to get into because it is only one series. You can start at #1 and read up to the current issue. The best and cheapest way you can do this would be to buy the two Walking Dead compendium that have been released. They go from #1-96 and they're around $35-40 each.

The second here for about the same price.

If you go on Amazon and get the compendiums, that'll catch you up pretty far. Amazon is WAY cheaper than the ones you'll find at the stores or comic shops.

First I would find a local comic shop and try and support them. If you don't have one near you here are some links for Amazon.
Compendium One
Compendium Two
Those two will catch you up through issue #96. You can either wait until Compendium 3 comes out in a year or so or buy the trades starting with Vol. 17. The trades collect 6 issues and come out a couple of times a year.
No, it's not too late to start reading them.
There are a lot of differences between the show and comic and is a different experience altogether.

Compendium One and Two float around $35 on amazon. That's not bad for One that you can take home now.

I don't like the cast, I think it could have been better.

However, I am TWD junkie, so when it isn't on, or I'm between the graphic novels, I watch FTWD.

Have you read the comics yet? If not, I HIGHLY recommend them.

*edit- You can get them in 3 compendiums now.. makes it a little easier. Compendium 4 should be rolling out soon, I hope!

They're available on Amazon if you feel like staying home and having them delivered to you.

I assume you're not interested in them for collecting reasons, so I would suggest ordering The Walking Dead Compendium 1, which covers all the way until the end of the prison arc. Then if you want continue you can order Compendium 2, which covers the story to most likely the end of season 5.

From there you will have to start buying smaller collected editions to continue, starting with the Deluxe Edition vol. 9.

  1. Mustaches for Old Posh Englishman (Teacher wish list)

  2. SAFETY folfable pink knife for never seen in public. Not because it's embarrassing, but because I don't want people to know I have it! It makes me weaker! (Default wish list)

  3. I ACTUALLY HAVE PENISES ON MY WISH LIST! They're bull penis chew toys, which are really good chew toys for dogs. =) (Default with list]

    ---

  4. Walking Dead Compendium 2 is my dorkiest item. (Teacher wish list. LOTS of my students really want to read this! Myself included!)

  5. Achieve a goal. ANY and ALL of the books (or supplies) on my Teacher wish list! Used, penny plus shipping. I instituted Free Reading Fridays in my English 12 class (seniors), and we need some nitty gritty urban literature, because my students are low-income urban students with bad home lives and horrifying stories that help them relate to the books on my list. One of my students, Caleb, wants to do his scifi project on the Deadspace comics. I got him the first one already. There are 4 more.

  6. I have a fire starter on my wish list!!! (Default wish list) ADD ON ITEM.

    Thanks for the contest! <3!

You could always get him the second TWD compendium. Amazon has it for $37.

If you're looking for something non-TWD and more self-contained, Ennis's War Stories are also non-cape, dark, style-consistent works. Each book has a few short stories that don't require additional context, and don't add to later stories. There's two trades that were form the mid-aughts out now, and two more coming out next year as something of a series revival.

Here is my books wishlist. any of them would be fantastic. i just recently got into reading, actually, and im having a blast reading through the mass effect books. i have the first two in the series, and id love to continue with Book 3!

then again, i have always wanted to continue reading the Walking Dead. that one is super pricey though, so lets stick with Mass Effect. :D

what am i gonna do with it? read the shit out of it, of course!! :)

Volume 2 comes out in October.

I'm excited. Haven't read one issue since issue 48 at the end of Compendium 1.

You could always read this. Or if you've read that, there's this. Or if you've already made that quest, may I suggest this?
