Drizzt Do'Urden, of The Legend of Drizzt series the modering original Mary Sue.

I'm also very partial to Kylar Stern of The Night Angel Trilogy. Slum boy to badass assassin. Love it.

I'm getting "gritty, relatively fast-paced fantasy" from this list.

I would recommend:

  • Prince of Thorns, when you're in the mood for a hateful and inventive protagonist.
  • Trickster's Choice for a non-Western fantasy world, a coup, and spies.
  • The Lies of Locke Lamora, this will be work reading, but at least stuff will be happening all the time, and it won't be totally ridiculous.
  • The Way of Shadows, if you can ignore the abused orphan boo-hoo beginning and are energized by fantasy ninja assassins.

A book is obviously the most useful thing, since it fulfills my need to do things other than video games this summer!

Happy Friday!

I'd like to read [this] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001E0V112/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_aEMwtb0N039KK) while lying in a hammock enjoying the sun.

Thanks for the contest.

Brent Weeks way of the shadows is good, and it's being turned into a graphic novel.

The Black Prism. It's the first in an amazing series! I also really love The Night Angel Trilogy but it is really dark so I usually don't recommend it to people I don't know personally. The description:

>For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art-and he is the city's most accomplished artist.
For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly - and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.
But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins' world of dangerous politics and strange magics - and cultivate a flair for death.

The Way of Shadows By Brent Weeks is excellent too. I read this series when it first came out years ago (I was working at a book store) and I loved it. It's his debut series so it's a little clunky at times, but I thought it was fantastic. He has another really good series out too now The Lightbringer Series. I've read the first book in this series and was not disappointed.

Glad I could help!
