i think books in the bible (particularly the old testament) really need strong annotations and a good translation for a modern reader. there is just no way a 2,000-5,000 year old collection of stories written in a mostly dead language makes sense to the modern reader without experts explaining things.

i like The Wisdom Books of Job, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs which are considered to be the most secular books of the old testament.

The New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha is supposed to be a very well translated and annotated version, often recommended by the folks at /r/AcademicBiblical but i haven't read it myself.

For people who are interested in this, I highly recommend Robert Alter's collection of translations, The Wisdom Books. Alter's translations (he's done about half of the Hebrew bible so far) prioritize preserving the original diction and rhythm from the Hebrew, and it really comes across in Ecclesiastes. They also come with really extensive footnotes on the Hebrew, which I find far more informative and useful than the footnotes I've seen in most comprehensive Bibles. Plus this collection includes Job, which is probably my favorite book of the Bible and is thematically very similar to Ecclesiastes.

Nice. He also has a book on Ecclesiastes- The Wisdom Books. Sounds like an author I would enjoy. Danke.
