I completely disagree. This team is good because it was forced to spend wisely. I don't know if you're a bandwagon fan or not, but if you've been a Mets fan for a while, I'm sure you know this team used to have very, very high payrolls spent on mediocre products. In fact, this team was literally "The Worst Team Money Could Buy" at one point.

The Madoff Scandal forced this team to develop talent internally. If you think that's not the case, you just haven't been paying attention. Under previous strategies, this team would have already traded deGrom and Matz, Syndergaard and d'Arnaud would never have been acquired, Dickey would still be playing for us, and we'd have Kendrys Morales at first, Michael Bourn in CF, and Stephen Drew at shortstop.

This team got good because it got poor, not in spite of it, and Alderson was the award- and pennant-winning architect.

I love it when people say this but ignore what actually happened. We used to spend money like morons. We spent a lot of it but we didn't spend it well. In other words, we literally had "The Worst Team Money Could Buy".

We're good now because we stopped spending money, not in spite of it. Our Madoff-derived poorness forced us to improve our organization - we had to clear deadwood, improve drafting, improve trading, and improve player development. There's no way in hell we turn around this quickly or completely if we still had lots of money. We'd have Bourn in CF, Ike Davis at 1B, Stephen Drew at short, deGrom and Matz on a different team, and the list goes on.

Even if you're not a Mets fan, I think The Worst Team Money Could Buy is still and essential read
