I am trying to do something similar because I have several USB Hard Drives that I have been using and I want to get rid of them slowly. Right now I have to carry them around and use them on the computer directly, and it became a pain. What I ended up doing was getting a USB drive "toaster" and plugging them into my Asus Router. I have an Asus RT-AC68U as an access point running Asus Merlin. And I got a toaster from Thermaltake. It's a https://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Drives-Docking-Station-ST0014U/dp/B002MUYOLW. Then the router can setup a shared drive from the USB port. Like this. https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011279/ . They also have a Synology router that would probably work too. I eventually want to get a NAS and been thinking about a Synology but still on the edge because I want to do Plex streaming. To get the Plex streaming, i would need the "big" expensive one from Synology. I'm actually thinking of trying to use my own NAS. Like OpenNAS or something similar. I want to run OwnCloud when I am all done and have big streaming from Plex I will probably have to roll my own. Ugh. Stuck between time and money, vs. more money and time. What do I do? Good luck m8. If all the hard drive don't have to be connected at the same time, use a docking station. If they do, a cheap case with a low power psu should be enough bu you'll need a sata controller card to connect them. I'd also like to know if other redditors have better solutions.
Can't you add an external sata (eSata) drive. I bought 3 and all are satalll and they will hold either 3 1/2 or 5 1/4 hds.
There are 1 & 2 slot units & you just insert drives vertically like toaster.
The single slot units are cheap. $50
Might let you recover the array by adding a new drive.

I use one like this (not sure of the brand on mine...), and it's worked well for me over the years.

SATA speeds should be faster than most external speeds. Unless you need to be moving hard drives around alot. You could also get one of these ThermalTake BlacXs
thank you. yeah i've basically figured I can just format my 2 3tb drives in exFAT, and then use something like this as a means of connecting my hdd to my friend's mac mini.
