John Varley's Titan trilogy was pretty fun. Basically, a humongous alien in the shape of a spinning hollow toroid who calls herself "Gaea" IS the ecosystem with lots of different lifeforms living inside her. It's a fantastic series.

John Varley is one my favorite authors I keep coming back to him time and again.

The following are my favorites. He also has a nice website [Varley.net](http://Varley.net "Varley.net") . You can actually get a decent feel for who he is on the site. He puts up what he wants and the hell with what anyone thinks. I think thats why I like him. lol

Mammoth is on my too be read list. I have it just not gotten to it.

The Titan series by John Varley. Can't get much tougher than Cirocco Jones.

*Except for her side-kick Gabby.

Try Varley's Gaea series. I reread it recently, it holds up pretty well.

Varley's Titan.

I don't see Titan mentioned here much. But you don't get much new creaturey than Titan.

You should try some of the older, shorter SF adventure classics. Here are a few links to get you started. I can vouch personally that all of these are smart, fun and well-written.

  • Hothouse by Brian Aldiss
  • Nova by Samuel Delany
  • Planet of Adventure by Jack Vance (much better than its cheesy name suggests)
  • Titan by John Varley

Edit: the best place to get recommendations of this nature is probably r/PrintSF.

The SF writer John Varley wrote a series of 3 books -- Titan, Wizard, and Demon -- that progressively better.
