>“Israel is apartheid” libel was first introduced outside of fringe anti-Israel circles.

Just to comment here possibly a nitpick. It was mainstream (in the sense that far left beliefs are ever mainstream) well before that. During the late 1960s it was already being mentioned as part of Soviet Zionology campaigns. It mainstreamed as a diplomatic push in 1974 which in 1975 resulted in the Zionism as Racism policy of the UN. Quoting Richard ShifterIn 1974, Fidel Castro and Muammar Gaddafi got together, they were both competing for the leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement. They worked it out to join in taking over the UN and that is what they did. Castro recruited all of those countries friendly to the Soviet Union and unfriendly to the United States, while Gaddafi mobilized all of the states of the Islamic Conference who were unfriendly to Israel. The two then went out to literally buy additional votes. While Cuban diplomats organized the subornation, Gaddafi provided the funds for the mass bribery of countries and ambassadors.” There is a good book on this topic: https://www.amazon.com/Right-Wrong-Revocation-Assembly-Resolution/dp/088400189X

Remember the context of Durban was the early 2nd intifada. The Palestinian people at that point had decided on a policy of random civilian murder inside Israel proper to increase leverage since they hadn't liked the Camp David proposal. Since most people were repulsed at the idea of widespread support for sending militants into civilians areas and murdering random people this needed to be legitimized at least to Western leftists. That's a hard argument to make. Durban was a point where Nazi inspired Zionology was introduced to European leftists who hadn't been politically aware during the 1970s. But it certainly isn't when it became mainstream for the far left. The left's adoption of explicit antisemitism using "Zionist" as a substitute for "Jew" as the basis for how to think about Israel began long before this.
