When you shave against the grain the razor tugs at the hair in addition to slicing through it, pulling it a bit farther out of the follicle. This makes it much easier to get ingrown hairs and irritation on the skin.

Edit to elaborate on everyone else's experiences by adding my own: Using Mach 3s and all that newer stuff I always broke out on my neck. Switching to a safety razor(a big part of this is also finding the right blade brand for you skin, Feather was way too sharp for me and caused razor burn, I ended up going with Derby), using a badger hair brush and shaving soap and making my own lather, shaving while showering and your hair is moist and skin is warm from the steam, and rinsing with ice cold water after the shave are what I found work the best. Hard to nail down exactly what helped the most cause I switched to doing all that at the same time.

Safety Razor

Blades

Soap

Fogless Shower Mirror

Mug to make lather in

Brush

After Shave

Cold Water ;P (I honestly think rinsing with cold water for at least 15 seconds before putting on after shave is the most important part in avoiding irritation and ingrown hairs.)

Slightly related:

Best fog free mirror I have used is from a company called ToiletTree.

Going on 4 years, not a single amount of fog, blur, fading etc. No other fog free mirror I've bought can compare to this.

/in case someone finds this useful

I would recommend http://www.amazon.com/Squeegee-ToiletTree-Products-Guaranteed-Designed/dp/B003BQ6QXK/ref=pd_sim_bt_1 - I've been using it for the last year. Sticks much better than a suction cup mirror (what I used to use), and the defogging is remarkably effective.

u/Funkit · 9 pointsr/BlackPeopleTwitter

this is what I use

It's actually fantastic as it really doesn't fog as long as you put water in the back.

u/swaggerbiscuit · 8 pointsr/everymanshouldknow

I shave in the shower all the time. Get a shower mirror that holds water in the back. It will keep the mirror warm and prevent it from fogging. Works like a charm, cost me 20 bucks

Shower Mirror

I have had it for years, even reinstalled it in different showers a number of times

First, I've just come to accept that my 5 o'clock shadow comes at about 1pm. A few things have made shaving more effective though.

  1. Use a good face lotion everyday. Helps to keep skin soft and easier to shave/reduce irritation.

  2. Get an anti-fog mirror so you can shave in a hot shower. I love this one: http://www.amazon.com/Squeegee-ToiletTree-Products-Guaranteed-Customers/dp/B003BQ6QXK/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1425198600&sr=8-7&keywords=anti+fog+shower

  3. A little exfoliating and/or pre-shave lotion before you shave isn't a bad idea. Can help the razor to run more smoothly/get closer and again, avoid irritation.

  4. Old school straight razors and shaving cream work better than new-fangled Mach 3s. They take a tiny bit of getting used to, but the shave is a lot better.

The subreddit /r/wicked_edge has a lot of great info (read the FAQ). Might be helpful to say what country you are in if you want product recommendations.

oh wtf did I write?

It's that one. OTHER PEOPLE CAN HAVE IT TOO I GUESS

u/Statikkk · 4 pointsr/BuyItForLife

If you mean something that installs IN your shower, this is what you want:

http://www.amazon.com/Squeegee-ToiletTree-Products-Guaranteed-Customers/dp/B003BQ6QXK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1382557722&sr=8-3&keywords=shower+mirror

I've had mine for 2 months now and it is fantastic. Fogless, very easy to install, easy to clean and works beautifully. I highly recommend it.

u/mabris · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I got this. It has adhered well, and the "fog free" is from the back being filled with hot water, rather than a coating. The coating never seems to last.

u/Madaardvark · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Just a suggestion, but might try shaving in the shower. I did that for a couple years and it was always the best finish with the least irritation. Invest in a fog free mirror. https://www.amazon.com/Squeegee-ToiletTree-Products-Guaranteed-Designed/dp/B003BQ6QXK

Or just buy this http://amzn.com/B003BQ6QXK

I've had one for 2.5 years, and its brilliant. Just fill it up with hot water, and it wont fog up. When you get done shaving, just pour the water out.

u/tdellaringa · 2 pointsr/everymanshouldknow

Been doing it for years. And you are not wasting water, let's face it, you're going to stand there anyway. But you need a good shower mirror, and this one is it. About to replace mine with a new one, which I have worn out.

These guys make a great one, search on amazon. You fill it with water and that's how it stays fog free. Comes with a squeegy and all. The company seems good too, I wanted to relocate mine and they sent me a whole new mounting kit(basically some glue) for free.

I use it every day in the shower.

u/Recon_by_Fire · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I've said this before, but I absolutely love my shower mirror. It has a reservoir in it and you just fill it with hot water and it hangs back on it's mount. This prevents steam from accumulating on it. The model I have also has a little shelf for the razor and a squeegee if you splash around. I get some bar soap and rub a nice thick layer on for shaving cream. I also use generic 3 blade disposables. Never going back to the electric I used in the military everyday. This One. 4.7 stars with 800+ votes.

u/pyro2927 · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Yes I do use one. No it does not fog. No chemicals or anything, you just fill the empty space behind the mirror with water when you start up your shower. The temperature is than equalized on both sides of the mirror and no fog is made! I originally thought "well this is lame, another step in my morning routine, filling my shower mirror", but it's really no big deal and takes about 5 seconds to fill it.

u/TheLogicalErudite · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Fogless shave mirrors are a thing.

Fogless Shower Mirror with Squeegee by ToiletTree Products.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003BQ6QXK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_EgoFybZTRG3K7

It's a little pricey for a mirror but it works perfectly. Fog is caused by condensation of the hot water on the cold surface of your mirror. This mirror has a well behind it that you fill with hot water to raise the temp of the mirror surface preventing that condensation.

I actually don't use mine anymore and would sell it to you if you'd like. PM me if you're interested.

This $30 that'll change your life.

Also, this and this and this and this and my very first Amazon order placed August 27, 1998 for this

u/SnarkMasterFlash · 1 pointr/AskMen

Not OP but I got this one about a year ago and it works freaking great.

u/Patbach · 1 pointr/lifehacks

This mirror has a countainer behind the glass (plastic glass) in which you pour hot water making the mirror hot like the water and thus, anti fog.

I've shaved in the shower my whole life (I'm 30yrs old) and just recently purshased this thing, and couldn't ask for more.)

u/Ellteaess · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

Looks like they take a bit of effort, but should work.

My dentist uses heated mirrors for a similar reason.

u/Gankstar · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I love to shave in the shower every morning.
I use this mirror and it works well.

9 months with this one and still love it. Simple design and works great

u/sylkx · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

I use this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003BQ6QXK/

Add hot water at the beginning of the shower and it is fog free.

u/rocketwidget · 1 pointr/firstworldproblems

Amazon sells a shower mirror that does not fog. You're welcome.

One of the best purchases I've ever made. (Links to Amazon product)

It does fog up after a couple of years, but it's never fallen off the wall. I bought a new one after a few years and just used the old mount.

u/usarmy973 · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I'm a head shaver. Although I LOVE the wetshaving community and (almost) everything about it, I don't use DE or SR to shave my head. This is because I had a bad experience doing so. I was using a DE and took a 1 inch diameter flap of skin off my head. It bled like crazy. Maintaining proper pressure while shaving my head was very difficult for me. For that reason, I use cartridge razors to shave my head. Shick xtreme 3 to be exact. I normally use glycerin shave soaps and just rub it all over my head and go nuts. Mama bear soaps has some good glycerin shave soaps. As to how often, that all depends on how fast your hair grows. I shave mine twice a week, normally. But would definitely say that I don't keep it smooth. If I were to keep it smooth I'd have to shave more often that that...like every other day or something.

Another issue with head shaving is that sometimes right after I shave my head it gets all dried out, quickly. I add lotion to my head right after and I'm right as rain.

Edit - I've been doing this for many years (military). I have found that shaving in the shower is ideal, and I recommend going onto amazon and buying this mirror it's the best thing in the world.

u/smdxs · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

You need one of the these, the ultimate shower shave mirror. It's what I use.

u/jmwotw · 1 pointr/AskReddit

I recommend the one by ToiletTree.

u/GreggBrain · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I absolutely love shaving in the shower. The constant supply of hot water and steam is amazing but makes mirrors a pain in the ass. I went off of Amazon reviews as soon as I started taking my DE shaves seriously (no more canned shaving cream!) and this little guy was at the top.

After about a year of use I can tell you it's worth the money. Fill it with the shower water (whatever temp you normally shower in) and it'll stay fog free for a good 30-40min.
