Most will work for the Wii U, and if it doesn't you can just send it back. If you do decide to get a big HDD, it would usually be formatted to NTFS which I don't think the Wii U can read, so format it to FAT32 beforehand.

I use this one which serves me well, but this and this also look good too.

Not sure what you need it for, but anyway here's a link to a good budget 1TB USB 3.0 Toshiba Canvio Basics External HDD

In simple layman's terms USB 3.0 devices are faster than USB 2.0 devices. In laptops generally they are the "blue" ports or some have Super Speed Written on them or they may have a symbol next to the USB port to identify them. USB 2.0 ports will support USB 3.0 Pen Drives. Only thing is they will operate at a maximum speed of 480Mbps.

There are three main ways to identify a USB 3.0 port:

The color: Blue means USB 3.0. Not blue does not mean it is not USB 3.0 though. This standard is quickly disappearing as USB 3.0 becomes mainstream.

The # of pins: A USB 3.0 port has 9 total pins. 5 in the front and the normal 4 in the back. You can shine a light into the port and if you see the 5 gold pins near the opening and 4 gold pins that are more recessed, you've got a USB 3.0 port. (see picture below: Left is USB 3.0 and right is USB 2.0).

The symbol: SS stands for "Super Speed" and this also means you have a USB 3.0 port. You can also check your Device Manager on any PC or Laptop to see what USB ports you have.

The PS4 is also USB 3.0.

You can also get it slightly cheaper at Dabs/BT
