Using this adapter with this craptastic router and I haven't noticed any issues with packet loss/latency that were caused by either of them over the 2 years i've used them.
This is with them being about 15-20 feet away from eachother and through a wall.

If you want to upgrade something, your CPU is the biggest upgrade. But that would require a new motherboard and ram as well. So if you're happy with your current performance and don't get framerates drops just keep your current build.

If it is a desktop I am going to suggest an internal card if you have open slots. I have found that USB adapters are unreliable. And again this is just my experience, I have had two of them overheat on me with heavy use. EX. Downloading something while streaming YouTube has caused mine to overheat and be unrecognizable by the system.

This wifi card would be fine for sub 150mbps speeds on the 2.4 GHz band. You'll want something more like this if you need faster speeds or want to use the 5GHz band.
I use hostapd with a TPLink PCI-Express card on one of servers (Debian) for my office wireless network. This is, of course, with routing enabled. Performance has been stellar. The machine in question has a Sandy-Bridge Xeon, and does a bunch of other things as well including being a KVM host.

There's also this delightful script that sits in /etc/init.d/hostapd and which enables hostapd to run flawlessly as a system service. I find it extremely valuable to be able to be able to configure and manage my wireless AP in exactly the same way that I would any other Linux-based service.

No issues at all, and doesn't take up a usb slot and block another like the usb one i had previously. Other than that the build seems pretty solid, though you could switch to a EVGA 600b psu for barely any more money and have 600w instead of 500w. The CX series has a bad reputation, though you'd still probably be fine either way.

Assuming you don't live a densely populated area where lots of people will have their own networks, or your router is close to your computer then the second will be perfectly fine. The first will provide a bit more future proofing such as being able to connect to 5ghz networks.

This is the card I used for a while. Works great. I do recommend some external antennae though, because they will help, but are definitely not necessary.
So there's this guy for $15 on Amazon after a coupon, up to 300 Mbps (37.5 MB/s) but can only work on your 2.4 GHz WiFi. What you linked is 2.4 or 5 GHz, and up to 800+ Mbps, or over 100 MB/s. Basically it depends on what sort of internet you guys have and how many devices are on your WiFi. Honestly the cheaper one will most likely be enough if all your mom does is online banking and light web browsing. Even for gaming/streaming stuff it would be fine.
You can also consider a PCIe Ethernet port like this to give you the same functionality that your broken Ethernet port would have.

I used to use a PCI Express Wifi card, which worked well enough. You can also get a usb wifi dongle. Either should work without much issue on both Windows or Linux.
A motherboard with integrated wifi would work fine too. It just depends on what's most price efficient for you. Normally motherboards with the integrated wifi are a bit more expensive, but I would think the difference between buying a wifi-less motherboard along with some sort of wifi accessory and a wifi integrated motherboard is negligible.

Lots of people get whichever motherboard fits their needs, and pick up PCI cards or USB dongles after.
PCI cards are generally better as they have antennae and can reach higher speeds. Here's a good one
However, with a mini itx build you may not have a PCI slot available, in which case you can get a USB dongle or wifi enabled motherboard. You shouldn't sacrifice features for wifi though.

I game and have never had problems connecting unless it was ISP side (boo comcast). I also stream Netflix and Amazon without any signal issues.

For your purposes either would probably work but I prefer having the cleaner look of a PCI card and I'm under the assumption that there is better power/bandwith going through PCI. This card works great and I had no problems installing it. The speeds are just as fast as specified. TP link also have a lower speed card for less. This shouldn't affect latency though which is what you really care about for gaming.

if it's desktop/pci-e I suggest this. Just get the most expensive version you can afford.
you need to make sure you're looking at wireless cards, so you won't see those numbers. I'd look for something that at least supports wireless N. And the 5GHZ (dual band) if your router supports it. If it doesn't, there's no reason to spend extra.

Get a Pcie card. USB isn't as reliable. I this one without issue, however you could pay more for dual band.
I bought the “TP-Link TL-WN881ND N300 PCI-E Wireless WiFi network Adapter card for pc” about 4 years ago for my PC that was too far across my home for an Ethernet connection.
About 6 months ago my WiFi speed on my PC would fluctuate up and down periodically, or randomly cut out. WiFi speed for my iPad/laptop were unaffected when this happened.
Is it possible this WiFi card can burn out or wear out over time? I know this may be a dumb question but that’s the only thing I can imagine it could be.

As for the WiFi card, if you absolutely have to have wifi, then get this ($60 - One of the best WiFi cards) or this (best sub-$20 card you'll find).
If you're able to, I would suggest getting a powerline adapter. You plug one into an outlet near your router and the other near your PC, then connect Ethernet cables and your Ethernet will connect through your electricity lines. This gives far better ping and consistency than wifi, but speeds are usually limited (anywhere from 25mbps to 125mbps depending on distance and wiring in your house).

I bought this wireless card and build up my PC last night. Previously I had a MoBo with a built in wireless card. I'm noticing higher ping and slightly lower speeds with this new card I'm using. How does it compare to something like this? I bought either this or something similar last year, and i get 3/4 bars of wi-fi from a couple rooms away (in a small apartment).
I have this wireless adapter and I get really shitty signal strength and speeds from my bedroom; I get much better speeds with my laptop and even my smartphone. I have a good wireless N dual band router. Is the problem that it's a single-band adapter? Would this dual-band adapter solve my problem?

Generally, PCI-E is much faster of an interface. However, Wifi speeds don't go nearly as fast as even the maximum speed of USB 2.0. So, speed-wise, it doesn't matter.
The USB one will be good for futureproofing your computer in case you later get a router with AC and 5GHz support. It's also nice in that you'll be able to preposition it to different USB slots for better signal.
For PCI-E, I would recommend this TP-Link one instead of the Rosewill:

This would be especially great for if you know you get a bad signal between your router and computer. You can connect it via USB and then stick the device up high somewhere for maximum signal. If you have a place to put the device and don't currently have or have plans to get an AC or 5GHz router, this is what I would get.
I would drop the cpu cooler since the i3-6100 comes with one and that will be sufficient enough. The gtx 1060 is better than the 1050ti for only $50 more. Also the wifi card you have is overpriced and this does the same for cheaper. And I doubt you really need a cd writer but your choice. This is also a cheaper psu with close to the same wattage.

You need this, it will connect to the motherboard using the small pcie slot.
Is it a desktop or laptop? "Best" can be a bit subjective when we're balancing affordable. Personally, I wouldn't want to go below a dual band n adapter, but you can very easily save money by going to a single band n. You could also look at going with a powerline adapter, which can potentially be a lot more reliable.
Edit: Bonus high end wifi card for comparison's sake. It's also worth noting that there's no sense in getting an ac card if you have an n router, unless you're willing to spend extra dollars to future-proof yourself.

Rosewill is a good enough brand. From what I can see on WikiDevi (a wireless chipset wiki), your card is a rebadged TP-LINK TL-WN781ND. I have the TL-WN881ND (same exact card but with 2 antennas), which I'm happy with. I get 180Mbps link on it, which is totally fine for my networking needs.
Depends on what computer he has. Is it a laptop? I put that card in my laptop to replace the older wifi card and it works perfectly. Is its a desktop you nay have to check the mobo or manual to see if it has a slot for a wifi card of that form factor

It is only single band though and if you spend an extra $20 you can get a dual band version.
I built my computer without a wifi adapter because I had direct access to a router. Since then I've moved to a house with shared wifi and I no longer have direct access, so I've been using phones or other devices on wifi and tethering them to the PC. This works ok for downloads and streaming but when i try playing online games like Rocket League I experience low ping (30-50ms) but still a lot of lag due to what I assume is packet loss.

I really hope it's not too late. I plan on making my new Pc with WLAN. I though / has been told to use something like this, a Wireless Link. I won't use that one because I have a new modern 801.11ac 5Ghz router. Wifi sucks for gaming. It's inherently unreliable just due to the nature of it. There is no way we can guarentee that if you buy "X" product your Wifi will be stable, there is so much variance in wifi setups. If you can run an Ethernet cable to your PC do it.
If you need to use Wifi get a PCI-e adapter if you can. This would be a decent basic one, more expensive ones are usually better, I have this one in one of my computers and have been very pleased with it. If you computer doesn't have any PCI-e slots then you'd get a USB Wifi adapter as a last resort. I'd stick to well known Networking brands like TP-Link, Linksys, Netgear and Dlink.

The antennae on the card might not be connected, or the card could be failing. The connector to the antennae is tricky to connect, and you can easily damage them when you connect them. On the positive side replacement cards are $8 at NewEgg

If you are on a desktop, and have a spare PCI slot you could buy one of those in that format, and many have a place for an external antennae that will improve your signal and speed. In my mind the PCI-E mini cards are more for notebooks, but if your motherboard has that connection I can see why it was used. Now for really great speed, run an ethernet cable from the router to your PC for some really blazing internet speed.
I would check the drivers and make sure you have the most up to date ones, as your card could be find, just needs new drivers. You might check HP's site.
Try going into device manager, finding the device and searching for updated drivers online (will need to do it over an ethernet connection obviously). Maybe there is a compatibility issue with that driver. Alternatively, download older drivers from the manufacturer website if available and try those. Those USB adapters can be glitchy sometimes. If that doesn't work, have him buy a TP-Link TL-WN881ND N300 and try that out. They work well and are fast enough for general use, while being cheap and coming with brackets for small and larger form factors. They are on sale on amazon right now actually. If it has to be a USB one try a different TP-Link one, they are usually pretty reliable.

I currently have my computer set up maybe 25-30 feet away from the router, and I am getting 2 to 3 bars of signal strength, with poor download times (600 kB/s to 1.2 MB/s) and bad latency lag on games (500-800 ms). I don't think that it is the ISP, since I was getting over 3 MB/s downloads while I was connected with a LAN Cable.
I've tried to download the latest driver from the website, but I'm not sure if it went through. It came with a disk to install but I don't have a disc drive. Is there any way to fix this shit?

Unfortunately the NIC card you picked is quite old. Just looking at its specs, it is only an "N" wireless card that only supports 2.4ghz WiFi, which means limited performance on channels that can be quite crowded. But even then, it should not be so painfully slow as to not be useable at all in most cases.

I opened a support ticket with TP-Link and their response was that they would not support this card on Windows 10. They said they will not be providing a driver and that I could use Qualcomm's Atheros driver, but that was not working. So the solution to this problem is to buy a supported WiFi adapter. I'd Google your card's model number and "Windows 10 driver" to get more confirmation, but it looks like that card is too old and not supported on W10.
Look for a new card that has "AC" and 5ghz support, it'll make a big difference. Be sure it has W10 drivers before buying, of course ;-)

This is the one I use, and it's alright. 50mbps dl near router when my MBP get 100mbps dl anywhere in the house lol. I'd recommend ponying up to get one $10-$20 more, but that's up to you.
You can get a PCIe wifi adapter and load up their drivers and such and connect via wifi. You can also use a USB wifi adapter, I don't know if one's better than the other, but I prefer PCIe.
If you want wired, you can get a Powerline adapter, which lets you connect wired/wireless by plugging it in to an electrical socket and pairing it with another adapter, I don't know the details of it (I'm planning to get one), so further research won't be bad.

As you're finding out, what you pay is what you get. If you care about high performance, you want to avoid USB adapters for WiFi unless it's a last resort or there's a technical limitation of the device you're trying to get on WiFi.
I'd go for a PCI/PCI-E wireless NIC with actual, physical rubber duck antennas (assuming you have a free PCI/PCI-E slot). The antennas are critical regardless; you can find these on USB adapters too, but usually only 1 (and you want at least 2 for high throughput). You're probably looking for something like either of these, depending on the exact model of your wireless router:

I would probably recommend the first one as baseline, but urge you toward the second. If your wireless router supports the 5.0 GHz band (A/N), then it'd be worth looking at the second card instead. The second card is overall of a higher quality regardless. Note that with either card, your computer will need a PCI-E slot.
It's probably the cheapest/easiest to just get a wifi adapter and use that. They can be had for about $20.
Or you can try Powerline Adapters. Which are a little more, but make a hardline connection similar to ethernet between the modem/router and the computer.
I'm not sure I'd muck around with anything else unless you fall into a strange usage case.
Should I risk trying to make the 2 work, or just go with another memory module ($2 difference, ADATA instead of Kingston, not blue, from Newegg not Amazon)? I am leaning towards the latter: better safe than sorry.
It really depends on how much you'd want to spend on it.
My friend has this one and it's pretty quick for 20 bucks, but he isn't very far away from the router.
