Look into powerline adapters. I’ve got solid WiFi and Ethernet in my bedroom now for £35 (even cheaper if you just want Ethernet), and no wires!

Your brother was probably using a powerline adapter that carried Ethernet across the electrical wiring to the garage. If that used to work fine, there's no reason why it shouldn't still work today. You can get a Powerline to WLAN kit at Amazon for around 40 pounds, like this one from TP-Link. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-WPA4220KIT-Powerline-Broadband-Configuration-UK/dp/B01LXOZ4EN/). The small grey box goes inside your house and connects to the existing router, the slightly larger white unit goes in your garage and provides Wi-Fi inside it.

Powerline doesn't have the best performance, but it should have no issues keeping up with a 40 Mbit connection.

A wireless point-to-point bridge is overkill and costs way more, if you say that the powerline used to work fine I would just go for this.

Get a pair of these mate

Plug one into the wall near your router and connect it to the router.

Plug the other in your bedroom and you can connect devices via ethernet but this product also doubles as a wifi extender so you will have brilliant wifi in your bedroom too.

WiFi repeaters plug into the wall for power, pick up your existing wireless signal and redistribute it throughout the area, they're awful and I wouldn't recommend them.

I would use an ethernet powerline with a WiFi access point. Only one ethernet cable is needed from your modem to the plug which sits next to your modem.

The plug the other end provides a second wireless connection, the internet is routed from your modem through the electricity wiring.

Because it isn't latching onto the existing wireless signal like a repeater would your connection is stronger and more stable.

Then you can set up devices to use both and change between the two depending where in the property you are.

Here is an example of the type of product I referred to

Powerline adaptors like these are really good, plug the on in near the router, connect it to the router, plug the other one where you want the wifi and boom, it works. I have their none wifi model set up at home and it works a treat. Downside is you lose a wall plug.

Not a fix as such, but I'd definitely recommend a 'powerline' or 'homeplug' kit. (With one of the plugs being a WiFi hotspot)
