So, let me go over why the Yi is a bad dash cam.

  • Lipo batteries crack, swell, leak, explode, catch fire, or other wise fail to supply the dash cam with power. - Especially when put under heat conditions.

  • WDR is nice in that dash cam it is one of the few positives I can think of.

  • Wifi/cellphone app - There are 2 files on the dash cam, 1 low res video, and 1 high res video. Low res video goes to your wifi/cellphone app, high res you pull off the card. This lowers transfer/watch times, but is rather annoying.

  • Lens - Dashcam - The lens of the dash cam is glass, but is glued in place. This glue can break in heat, and then the lens spins around, causing out of focus problem.

  • Does not come in black - Not discreet, any dash cam that does not come in matt black is that way for a reason. It is an indication of a massive heat problem inside the dash cam.

  • Looks like a camera - This causes people to want to touch your dash camera. These people will change it's position, steal it, tell other people you have one, play with settings, and other wise disable the dash cam for when you need it. Dash camera is there to be your silent witness in an accident, you don't want other people touching it.

  • Not discreet - Causes people to want to steal it.

    -------

Rexing = Bad clone of A119 or A129.

In the dashcam world there are two very specific types of dash cams.

  • Excellent video quality, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode dash cams: These are built for new dash cam buyers wants. Lackluster parking mode isn't bad, it just lacks one or more of the features of Excellent parking mode. Fair build quality, minor bugs/errors to be expected - keep up with firmware updates expected.

  • Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good/Fair video quality dash cams: These are built for veteran dash cam buyers wants. Excellent build quality, few if any flaws/bugs, maintenance is largely optional, and more functional bells and whistles. Excellent parking mode: Automatic Engage/Disengage; Buffered - able to record a few seconds before and after G sensor and/or Motion sensor activation (like a time machine;) Built in (or Recommended hardwire kit) Low voltage cut off feature (Adjustable) Voltage/Time based. Good/Fair video quality is far from Excellent, you should check it. Good video quality does exist in this dash cam type. Excellent video quality does exist in this dash cam type (expensive though.)

    ---

    Budget dash cams:

  • B1W ($47-55 USD) - Has wifi/cellphone app, Good video, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode.

  • A119 v2 ($79-105 USD) - Excellent video quality, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. No wifi/cellphone app. Lacks Cloud feature.

  • A119S v2 ($90-119 USD) - Good video quality, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. No wifi/cellphone app. - This dash cam was supposed to surpass the A119 v2 in video quality. It never did. Firmware updates were supposed to make it better video quality. Only surpasses A119 v2 in Extremely dark conditions, lesser video quality in all other conditions. Lacks Cloud feature.

  • A119 Pro ($90-124 USD) - Good video quality, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. No wifi/cellphone app. - This dash cam is supposed to surpass the A119 v2 in video quality. Waiting on firmware updates. Same hope as A119S v2. Lacks Cloud feature.

  • Street Guardian SGGCX2 (Includes memory card and CPL filter) ($160-290 USD) - Good video quality, Good build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. Last year's Flagship Dual Cams:

  • BlackSys CH-100B 2CH ($200-270 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good/Fair video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. Good/Fair video quality is a far step down from Excellent A119 v2 video quality, you should compare sample footage. This dash cam's strong point is it is simply a good dash cam, user friendly wifi/cellphone app. Lacks Cloud feature. Has partitioned normal/Parking recording.

  • BlackVue DR650S 2CH ($298-370 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good/Fair video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. People complain about this dash cam's video quality. It is similar to the CH-100B 2CH but for some reason people have higher than average expectations for video quality from this one. First of the Cloud feature dash cams. Lacks partitioned normal/Parking recording.

  • Thinkware F770 2CH ($330-390 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. Lacks Cloud feature. Has partitioned normal/Parking recording. This dashcam has improved video quality over the CH-100B 2CH/BlackVue DR650S 2CH, and it shows.

  • Street Guardian SG9663DC (Includes memory card and CPL filter) ($290-490 USD) - Similar to the A129 2CH dash cam, missing wifi/cellphone app.

  • BlackVue DR900S 2CH (4K) ($480-591 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Excellent video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. Has Cloud feature. Has partitioned normal/Parking recording. - One of the few dash cams that is similar/surpasses the A119 v2.

  • Thinkware F800 2CH ($380-430 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. Has Cloud feature. Has partitioned normal/Parking recording. - The first of the Thinkware Cloud dash cams.

    Taxi/Uber Cam:

  • Transcend DP520 ($170-300 USD)

  • Vantrue N2 Pro ($200 USD) - Has Battery, big negative for warmer climates.

  • Blackvue DR650S-2CH-IR ($320-540 USD)

  • BlackVue DR750S-2CH IR ($400-560 USD)

  • Also Thinkware IR 2nd channel cameras available.

    ---

So of this list, B1W, A129, BlackSys CH-100B 2CH, are with in your price range.

    I would also encourage you to look at: BlackVue DR650S 2CH, Thinkware F770 2CH, BlackSys CH-200 2CH, BlackVue DR750S 2CH, BlackVue DR900S 2CH, Thinkware F800 2CH, and Thinkware F800 Pro 2CH.

Also look at the Excellent video quality of the A119 v2.

It is important to know what you are missing, and looking at video samples of: Day/Night/Shadow is important. Buyers remorse is real in the dash cam world, and fully researching the products you want, and the products you don't eases it.

This will sound like victim blaming but...

  1. Do not let a drink guy sit in your front seat. There is a reason why taxi passengers sit in the back seat (and there use to be a barrier back there).
  2. Get a dash cam. It will be able to record any bad behavior for proof later on. Otherwise you are in a he-said, she-said situation. Remember that taco bell executive that hit that Uber driver? That would have been a non-story without the camera. I recommend this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0147QA57K?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
  3. Cameras also have a calming affect on on passengers and often deters bad behavior. If you do not want to pay for a camera, put up signs everywhere that the passengers are being recorded by hidden cameras for their safety. When they ask where the camera is, tell them that it is a hidden camera, and if you told them where it was, then it would no longer hidden.
  4. Report this to the police. Something worse my happen to the next driver.
