I have the same problem living in San Francisco. I use a folding hand truck similar to this one. Unfortunately I don't have a specific recommendation for a hardware store in your area, but any good hardware store should carry such an item. I bought mine from Sears for $30 USD.

I carry a Deluxe Reverb-sized amp and a smaller gig bag with effects and stuff on the cart, and carry my guitar in my other hand.
