Don't cheap out on the X12s. People clearly aren't acknowledging your original statement. The X12s are a stereo headset, meaning you won't be able to hear the direction of shots/footsteps. Also, they're wired.

I've got the X42s and although the surround sound is "Simulated" it does a damn good job. They sound awesome, and are wireless. I've been playing H4 for months with them and it's awesome. Especially in modes with no motion sensor.

Amazon got them here http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B006W41W3M for 129.00 which is under your budget and MUCH better than the X12s.

The short answer is that literally any headset that you can cable to your computer will work.

The long answer is that the quality of the voice recording and the sensitivity of the microphone varies wildly.

I picked up a pair of Turtle Beach X42s for gaming after my X31s broke, both of which are Xbox 30 headsets. After about $20 in cabling I can connect it to my Xbone and laptop and I use it for everything. It's extremely sensitive on the Xbone and PC though, to the point where I have to take the batteries out of my analog clocks and turn off my ceiling fan because the microphone picks them up.

On the flip side, my very first PC headset was a $15 Logitech and the voice recording quality made it sound like the headset was inside of a sofa cushion at the other end of the room.

As far as worth it, I'd say so. Once I unleashed my headset on voice recording HITs I made the cost back in under a week, and I've yet to come across a voice recording HIT that wasn't worth doing. It also appears that X42s have gotten a lot cheaper since my pair cost just under a c-note when I bought them.

I use a pair of Turtle Beach X42 which I have been using since the Xbox 360 and it uses a 2.5. When I got the Xbox One I had to buy a Stereo Headset Adapter to be able to still use the headset. I've went through 3 of these since the release of adapter. When I purchased them they were $25 now they're $80. Now I'm trying to figure which of the two I can use because even though they're similar they're not the same.

I use the turtle beach x42s; http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Wireless-Surround-Headset-Xbox-360/dp/B006W41W3M

the main downside that I have when going on PC is that I have to have a Xbox360 controller plugged in and then mic line plugged in through that to get mic. BUT, the head set was cheap ($100 walmart sale) and i have a cable that I can go to my PS4 to with them. So one set of headphones for Xbox, PS4 and PC. Uses one of those Fiber Optic cables that plugs into my sound card, to a wireless box that goes to the headphones. IMO its crystal clear sound, outside noise cancelling, and I can generally hear and track footsteps in most games I play.

This is the one I've been using for years. It's lasted with zero problems. It's old so it's way cheaper then newer versions and sounds amazing. The microphone is super clear. The only downside to it is the mic is a little too sensitive. Can pick up noises from far away.

You can buy the PS4 TalkBack cable for cheap to get the microphone to work.

Had these for 3 years without problem. You can hear yourself as you talk in the speakers, wireless connection from headset to receiver (except has one wire for headset to controller) has 5.1 surround, and independent volume controls.
