Marvel has had a lot of stuff happen over the last decade. The Scarlet Witch had a mental breakdown, some Avengers died, a bunch of mutants lost their powers, Jean Grey died again, there was a superhero civil war over whether the government ought to register heroes, Captain America died, the Hulk destroyed Manhattan once, Spider-Man's history got changed so he and Mary Jane never got married, Skrulls invaded, Norman Osborn got put in charge of SHIELD for a while, Captain America came back, the X-Men moved to San Francisco, Wolverine is in charge of the old Xavier school, the Phoenix was going to destroy the world or maybe it wasn't and there was a lot of fighting about it.

Here are, I think, the most important story arcs to catch up on the status quo and a lot of different characters' story arcs:

  • Avengers Disassembled

  • House of M

  • Messiah Complex

  • Secret Invasion

  • Second Coming

  • Schism

  • Avengers vs. X-Men

X-Man is around, though he's not in any books right now at this moment, unfortunately. He was in New Mutants volume 3 from issue #25 until issue #50, when it was canceled. So he's just kind of out there at the moment. Oh, but if you were an Age of Apocalypse fan, you should check out the Age of Apocalypse series that ran for a while recently. It only lasted 14 issues, but it was pretty good. The first volume is here: http://amzn.com/0785163026. I'd also really recommend checking out Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force, which was really, really good, and also tied into the Age of Apocalypse in its Dark Angel Saga storyline. The first volume of that is here: http://amzn.com/0785148558

Which one comic series would I recommend reading first? Hawkeye. Definitely Hawkeye. It is a really well written, beautifully illustrated, low key book that absolutely does not require reading anything else.

> I'm weary of being almost required to have a HUGE background in Marvel to get going

A "HUGE background" is not necessary. Consider that reasons for being "weary" are partly YOUR self-limitation. You don't NEED to start at the beginning of every story. It's OK to jump into the middle. It's OK to NOT know a character's backstory IMMEDIATELY (e.g. Darth Vader). Have you ever watched a good movie with a non-linear narrative (e.g. Pulp Fiction)?

> before I'll be forced to pick up some random trades or something to continue the narrative because of a tie-in event or whatnot

Again, "forced" implies that YOU feel compelled to do it. You can just wiki relevant information IF YOU WANT TO. You can't expect to dive into the "wider X-Men universe" AND not encounter events. Further, it'd be difficult to read shared-universe superhero comics and not encounter events/crossovers.

> How possible is it to slowly dip my feet into X-Men stories

You answered your own question earlier: pick up a few self-contained/essential/recommended series like New X-Men and just start reading. The larger shared universe stuff will come with time (like slowly fitting random pieces of large, convoluted Jigsaw puzzle)—think of it as a side-bonus rather than the primary goal.

Here's a condensed X-related reading list (bolded are what you've already mentioned, events are labeled):

It's already a complete run (35 issues).

The first trade is this one.

If you start liking it and you like omnibuses, you can also pick the recently released omnibus.

It's a tricky question, actually. Which X-Force tie-ins have you read? There are a lot of incarnations of X-Force over the years (and a lot of tie ins). For an overview, I would go see Crushing Krisis Collecting X-Force

Personally, I would start with the Kyle & Yost helmed 3rd series (2008). See X-Force Vol 1 This is a modern, edgy, and hard hitting X-Force. It is directly responsible for developing the X-Force into what it has become.

If, however, You want to start a little more recently Uncanny X-Force is awesome. It spins directly out of the X-Force mentioned above. So I would still start above.

Finally the new Uncanny X-Force is also great. It is a bit of a departure from the Remender/Yost series. So if you want to hit the ground running with the current series, I would start here.

Read Uncanny X-force. It's amazing and has one of the best big arcs in recent times--'The Dark Angel Saga.' It's 35 issues long, and has recently been rebooted, so don't confuse it for the reboot. Start with this.

Check out some more Matt Kindt work - Mind MGMT is fabulous, and I really enjoyed Red Handed.

Also, if you want the DC version of Civil War, released ten years earlier and (IMO) much, much better, give Kingdom Come by Mark Waid a look.

I haven't read Bunn's Deadpool, but IMO the absolute best Deadpool is Joe Kelly's.

Just some other books to check out:

Issue 4 of the current numbering, the final issue of The Apocalypse Solution.

The Uncanny X-force run by Remender is good for Archangel stuff (this uncanny x-force series because there are quite a few) and covers the whole transformation into his current form. There is a lot of older stuff in X-factor I'm not sure if you get that with marvel unlimited. I could figure out more specific issues but it would take me some time.

Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender: The Complete Collection Vol 1

Features Deadpool on the team in one of the best stories he is a part of. Includes the first 19 issues of the comic.

If that one is too expensive, the go for Uncanny X-Force: The Apocalypse Solution. It's half the price, but only included the first four issues. The other is a much better deal.

For anyone who wants to read the comics, Uncanny X-Force is possibly the best X-Men arc of all time. It might or might not be where the white Deadpool suit is from.

Awe boo. I guess that's kinda true. I'd probably whine about it to my SO, or creepily stare over his shoulder while he played... and mutter about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery :P

Yess! Wigs are FUN! Blue is on my list. Purple is next, purple with BRIGHT PINK!

Don't Starve is coming out with multiplayer sometime soon! Plus RoG is pretty fun, just remember to start in the autumn.
I'll check out Diversity. I'm always looking for servers, I still haven't found one that I really like.

Mmmm, Uncanny X-Force actually has Deadpool in it. Not a TON, but it's a good introduction to his character with a good blend of suggestion, morals, and punny jokes. Check out the Apocalypse Solution.

After that I'm not even sure where you could go. Cable and Deadpool is a classic. Joe Kelly's Omnibus just came out not long ago, and he's considered one of the best writers for Deadpool's character. Daniel Way's Complete collection is in the works, with an omnibus on the way. Way has a lot of subtleties with his DP. A lot of the time it is directly in your face, but I feel like there's more you can read into if you look.

Wha-wha-whaa? There's a different ending in Watchmen? One of the biggest problems I had with the movie was with the ending and you're telling me it's different? Hmmm. I may just have to pick it up after all.

V's good, It's Alan Moore so you really can't go wrong. I think the movie actually held up pretty well against the book actually.

You know I haven't pick up any of the Avenger stuff. We've got a Thor comic laying around that I need to read, but that's it. It's funny because I actually really like RDJ's Iron Man, but I've not picked up the comics yet.

I'm a Marvel Hero Fan and a DC Villain fan. I feel like DC's villains are more rounded and actually have pretty respectable goals/logic. (Mr. Freeze and his poor Nora! Never mind backstory, there's at least warped logic!) But Marvel's villains feel lackluster in comparison. Very flat most of the time.

On the flip side Marvel's heroes (or anti-heroes) feel more rounded to me than DC's do.

I'm always willing to read more though. Lots to read- I'll never get through it all.

^^^and ^^^I'm ^^^so ^^^sorry ^^^these ^^^are ^^^so ^^^long, ^^^I ^^^never ^^^get ^^^to ^^^talk ^^^to ^^^people ^^^about ^^^comics ^^^:(

I actually really liked the early books that Daniel Way did. This book is something I would still enjoy reading and I thought it was fun. It was my go-to book when I needed something lighter from all the dark and gloom of Batman books I read among other titles.

Was fortunate to pick up the second volume for cheap and was severely disappointed. I didn't care for the story line or the art.

Uncanny X-Force is good. More serious Deadpool. I really liked volume one, but I don't know how the series progresses.

I've also heard great things about Deadpool and Cable.

Oh, I also own Deadpool Team Up volume 3 which I enjoyed.

centipededamascus pretty much has you covered. To supplement his list I'd like to add Joss Whdon's run on X-men and Spider-Man: Big Time, although I highly recommend Ultimate Spider-Man if you want an amazing retelling of Peter's origins. Other noteworthy books to check out are Mark Waid's recent run on Daredevil, Remender's run on X-force, and Hickman's Fantastic Four.
