I totally recommend Simon Scarrow's quartet on Napoleon and Wellington. Along with a large deal of conquest in the later books, as you'd expect, their personal lives and the era of the late 1700s and early 1800s is richly detailed; very entertaining and of course to an extent informative. I wholly agree with the primary review on the page, but I'd perhaps add another half star.

I'm also a fan of his Eagle series (not a fan of the new covers). They are definitely more mainstream reads and are certainly more fiction than factual. Even so I really enjoy them.

I've not had a chance to recommend it and it's not fiction, but Joseph Cummins' History's Greatest Hits writes about 37 typically popular historical events like the story history really is and I keep coming back to it. Really nice quality presentation too!

Are you specifically wanting books on Spartacus or is it historical fiction in general that you are after?

Conn Iggulden kinda touches on it in his Emperor series, but it's from a Roman POV. Here's the first in the series.

If you're just interested in historical fiction, set in Roman times, then Simon Scarrow has written some enjoyable stuff. They are a very easy read. Here's the first of the Eagle series.

Gates Of Fire by Steven Pressfield is a great book about the Spartan stand at Thermopylae.
