Re: Autogynephilia. It's true that nobody likes to be categorized into a paraphilia, but I guess the point I'm making is more that if your gender dysphoria can be expressed as a fetish you should consider yourself lucky and embrace it. Just sayin...

On to the books: in retrospect, it's hard to say which is the best place to start. If you're still trying to figure out your own identity, I don't want to overwhelm you with a consistent narrative. I would actually suggest flipping through Transsexualism: a Medical Retrospective (which is quite short and just 0.99$) and then going to Gender Outlaw. I recommend these not so much because they are the best written, nor the most insightful, but because they explore the breadth of gender diversity. If you can parse it (and it's dense), I also strongly recommend Undoing Gender, by Judith Butler.

After that, my personal favourite is Serano (Whipping Girl. Boylan is well-written certainly, but a bit excessively dramatic (IMHO).

Here are some that seem particularly relevant:

  • Donna Haraway, "A Cyborg Manifesto"; Full text in the link, influential article of breaking up the boundaries between human, animal and technology. Somewhat controversial.
  • Beatriz Preciado, "Counter-Sexual Manidesto"; Excerpt in the link. Not sure whether there's a full English translation, the original is Spanish, and there is a full German translation. Building upon Haraway's manifesto it describe how sexual practices could be used to actively reinvent gender.
  • Batriz Preciado, "Testo Junkie"; Only recently translated into English. Personal report of Preciado's experiences with taking testosterone; Not as a method of transitioning, but as a form of experimentation, what she calls "gender hacking".
  • Judith/Jack Halberstam, "Female Masculinity"; Again a book by Halberstam. This one is about "female" appropriation of masculine acts. E.g. Butch people, drag kings, etc.
  • Judith Butler, "Undoing Gender"; Judith Butler is more or less inescapable if you get more deeply into gender theory. This book is probably her most accessible book, and it focuses (at least mostly) on "non-standard" forms of gender and sexuality.

I just asked this question in r/books and got back the recommendation of Undoing Gender by Judith Butler; reflections on gender and sexuality from Feminist Theory and Queer Theory. I haven't read it but I'm waiting to order it.

One I do like is Lisa Diamond's Sexual Fluidity, a longitudinal (10+ yrs) study focusing on bisexuality. She defines sexual identity as something in flux that changes and is molded over our lifetime.
