Here's what I recommend:

Physical stuffs:

  • USB-C dongles (if you need them and don't have them already)
  • Laptop sleeve/case/bag (if you don't have one already and feel like you might need it)
  • Maybe a keyboard cover – Butterfly keyboard reliability woes. You might be a lucky one who has no problems, but are you willing to take that risk? That being said, you can always file a keyboard replacement from Apple's keyboard replacement program...
  • A good wireless mouse – I tend to get hand cramps when I use the trackpad for an extended period of time. Maybe it's just me though...
  • External display – even my 15-inch MacBook Pro gets cramped sometimes. Depending on your workflow, you may want to invest in an external monitor.
    • And a good keyboard and mouse to go with it :)

      Mac-specific Software:

  • SMCFanControl (FREE) or MacsFanControl (FREE) – Apple likes to keep Macs, especially MacBooks as quiet as possible without much consideration to heat. If you do anything remotely intensive, you'd better get one of these to keep your machine cool.
  • Magnet ($1.99) – Allows for Windows-like snapping features for your windows.
  • Dozer (FREE) – Allows you to hide menu bar icons
  • NightOwl (FREE) – Allows you to change from Light to Dark mode on a schedule
  • Alfred (FREE) – Spotlight search but massively improved
  • Amphetamine (FREE) – Keep your Mac awake (i.e. when file downloads, etc.)
  • DaisyDisk ($9.99) – Manage your storage space
  • AppCleaner (FREE) – When you uninstall apps, they leave behind hidden files which this app will delete for you.

    Other software:

  • Todoist/Any.do (FREE) – Manage your tasks and reminders
  • Google Keep (FREE) – Manage your notes
  • Firefox/Opera (FREE)– Browse the web. What I've found is that Safari will give you the best battery life, but it lacks extensions. Chrome on the other hand is a huge resource (battery and RAM in particular) hog. I personally use Firefox, but Opera is also a good choice. Opera also supports installing Chrome extensions.
  • Pocket (FREE) – Save articles for later
  • Spark (FREE) – Best email client I've ever used

That about does it for me. Thanks for reading :)

I love the butterfly switches, but i use a Ghost cover. It really changes the typing experience. No problems with the switches being protected though! I use a Magicforce68 at work and my Magic keyboard at home.

This is the computer I have and it works fine. I edit my Olympus OMD E-M1ii 20 megapixel files just fine. My computer does run a little slower because my external hard drive is NTFS that is a Microsoft hard drive file system. Macs can read NTFS hard drives out of the box just fine but they can't write to NTFS without going into the kernel and changing a setting. I run a third party program that let's my Mac write to NTFS. Seagate offers a free program. Here is

Paragon NTFS for Mac 15

https://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/ntfs-driver-for-mac-os-master-dl/

If you format a external hard drive to Mac format it will run faster. I just did not do this because for a few reasons. One I already had a lot of files on this hard drive when the drive was hooked up to my Dell. Also I have Windows 10 installed on this Mac as a second OS for a few other programs that are not on Mac and Windows. There are a few ways for Windows to read Mac and Mac to read Windows out of the box. If a drive is FAT 32 or EXFAT these are open file systems that Microsoft made open to everyone. There is FAT16 and I think even something lower then FAT16 but no one uses those anymore unless for really old PC computers for some retro stuff.

Also I recommend you getting a slip cover for you Mac keyboard. This brand is very good and this is what I use.

Edit:
I realize I didn't answer your question the first time so I'm back haha.
Two years ago I asked an Apple store employee what they used to wipe down all Apple products because everything was so clean. Like no fingerprint stains on any of the keyboards, immaculate iPad and iPhone screens.

He told me they used "Whoosh" cleaner and microfiber cloths, both available on Amazon.
https://smile.amazon.com/WHOOSH-Award-Winning-Screen-Cleaner-Antimicrobial/dp/B00DOPW5L0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1502605520&sr=8-3&keywords=whoosh
I've used Whoosh on my own Macbook Pro and indeed it cleaned my screen effectively, but I haven't needed to use it on the keyboard since I use keyboard covers. Also, this was on the 2015 Macbook Pros. Ymmv since we're now talking about the 2017 MBPs, but if you ever stop by an Apple store, you can always ask them what they use - or if they use/ever used Whoosh.

Original post:
If you don't mind the frosty look on your keys, I'd recommend a keyboard cover. I've used one on my Macbook Pro 13 2015 since the launch week and buy a new one every half year or so for cleanliness reasons.

In my limited experience, a brand called Uppercase has pretty consistent quality. Good luck!

I got the ghost blanket and ghost cover from UPPERCASE off of amazon for my 13”:

UPPERCASE GhostBlanket Screen... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PPPY1LV?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

UPPERCASE GhostCover Premium... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRKLH27?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

They work great at protecting the screen, and I have never had a problem closing the computer with both of them in it. Both of them together are still thinner than most silicon covers anyway.

u/AOrangeOrange · 2 pointsr/macbookpro

I got it off a local website, but this seem to be the same; https://www.amazon.com/UPPERCASE-GhostCover-Premium-Keyboard-Protector/dp/B01MRKLH27

You can probably find them for a bit cheaper too, this one is a little bit on the pricy side.

u/idanlo · 2 pointsr/macbookpro

I have my keyboard cover on my MacBook for about 2 weeks and nothing happened to the screen. The cover is so thin you can barely notice so I guess it doesn't touch the screen. If you do get one make sure you get this one from amazon - it's the best https://www.amazon.com/UPPERCASE-GhostCover-Premium-Keyboard-Protector/dp/B01MRKLH27/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=Keyboard+cover&qid=1566389511&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Not op here. But i can give you the link, https://www.amazon.com/UPPERCASE-GhostCover-Premium-Keyboard-Protector/dp/B01MRKLH27/ref=zg_bs_3015407011_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=XH0FT42SQ24BFZ0GMKZF&th=1

As far as i know, it doesn't really affect the typing experience, more covers it from getting the keyboard damaged and what not.

u/ms285907 · 1 pointr/macbookpro

I would definitely get one. I bought a 2016 MacBook Pro TB and accidentally spilled water directly on the keyboard.. Needless to say, after spending ~$1400 to repair my laptop, I've invested in a keyboard cover, hard shell case and sleeve. Never again.. Never again 😪

This one is great! I barely notice it.

Purchase this keyboard cover:

and also buy a screen protector to minimize any potential damage the screen could get hurt from. I've been using the keyboard cover with a screen protector for awhile now and it's completely fine. AFAIK the whole advice with not buying a keyboard cover for the new butterfly keyboards is a bunch of paranoia. The maximum damage a flimsy piece of rubber can do to your glass screen is cause some temporary visible cosmetic damage that can be wiped away by a cloth.

u/indygreg71 · 1 pointr/applehelp

I have hated covers in the the past (tried some on my old MBP a few years ago). But when I got my new 13 a year ago I got this and honestly I forget its there.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRKLH27/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It also makes the keyboard look matte and its looks cool.

u/tony_mendo · 1 pointr/mac

Yeah, that’s exactly the reason why I use it. I bought this laptop in 2017 brand new, put the cover on inmediately and haven’t had any problem with the keyboard. Here is the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRKLH27/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FvkLDbDVF0RF6

The GhostCover is great, doesn’t leave any marks on the screen, and it doesn’t get all sticky and weird. It’s also incredibly thin (0.12 mm thick). I have one for my MacBook Pro 2017 13” and it is awesome

Edit: just make sure to buy the right size and version
