So the fan controller has a MOLEX adapter for power. The data to usb has a MOLEX to power cable in the box (I’ve had a few and the vantech one that I listed should have an inline power button).

I’ve tried splicing the cables and although that works this is far far easier and effective. I hope you see this before you buy to many other solutions because I personally think this is the easiest.

btw - if all you're doing is checking whats on the drives (which is what your original post said), the Vantec adapter is way cheaper. If you're concerned about the transfer speed (not sure why, unless you're connecting SSDs), there's also a USB 3.0 version for $35. It doesn't look as nice as a dock, and I wouldn't use it long-term or anything, but if you just need to check drive contents and copy a few files, it's perfectly fine for that.

It was 2.5 and I used this it will also do 3.5 and ide. It is powered so you don’t have to worry about the rpi powering it

Years ago I got an adapter cable that basically made an internal hard drive into an external one, without a case. Now there are better and faster adapters on the market that are compatible with USB 3.0 to speed up transfer times such as https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E7EPKUO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_tjedBb31N6HET My husband and I have had quite a few towers that we've gotten rid of but kept the hard drive. I need to archive pictures and music onto the cloud, as well as back it up to a couple of physical sources in case something happens and the hard drive fails. Perhaps any of these ideas may help you get control of your electronic clutter as well.

I'm not entirely sure how you would make this entire thing work honestly.

It's not on your list, but if you don't have a STATE/IDE to USB adapter, consider it. I've restored data from countless failed external drives and such with one of these things.

I don't have this model because the USB 3.0 version didn't exist, but I do have this brand and I like it.

Those have SATA data cable/plug without the power side.

Depends on how old. Most likely sata but it's possible it could be ide. Some come with an adapter.

If you can’t find that, you might find a ide-> sata and then you could just plug it into a desktop computer. Or ide -> sata -> usb. I know that isn’t what you asked for but it might be challenging to find a ide -> usb in Spokane

I bought this SATA adapter from the eBay seller in the listing. It arrived faster than the scheduled delivery date. I went with this option because I wanted to keep the capabilities of the official Network Adapter. It's a pretty easy install even for beginners.

I wasn't sure how many games I would install alongside adding Free HDBoot, so I went with a 500GB hard drive given I heard of some issues with some 1TB brand IDE hard drives depending whether your system wants to play nice with it or not. I picked up the Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 from Amazon. It connects and runs flawlessly. Maybe someone else can chime in about this adapter and working 1TB hard drives if you go that route.

I ended up going with the Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 3.0 Adapter, also found on Amazon. I was able to connect and format the hard drive and also install PS2 games with no problem.

But like /u/Jakomako said, I wouldn't use it as a storage drive. It's an older drive, so it's more likely it will fail. Plus, it's probably got less than 500 GB of storage anyway.

Oh, that's right. I forgot HDLoader can rip discs right from the PS2 drive.

No, OPL does not do this, but it's much better for playing the games. It's really not hard to rip and install with a PC. You just need an external dock or a cable like this.
