So dash cams are either:

  • 3 months -> 2 years life span. - Fair/Poor build quality

  • or 5+ years life span. - Excellent build quality.

    This is the same for maintenance:

  • Fair/Poor build quality = High maintenance.

  • Excellent build quality = Low maintenance

    High Maintenance = Check over all dash cam operation every 30-45 days, Check for broken/missing files 30-45 days, Format Micro SD card 30-45 days, Check/Update firmware 30-45 days.

    Low maintenance = Format Micro SD card every 30-45 days (some have automatic formatting with a time interval option.) Everything else becomes more optional.

    > I would really prefer if it was not more than around 100 dollars total to set up.

    You won't find that really.

    Dashcam + Hardwire kit + Micro SD card = Cost.

    Sure you could delete hardwire kit I guess. However most of the cheaper dash cams require a separate purchase of a High Endurance Micro SD card. (Suggested to get High Endurance, MLC based, with error correction.) Avoid Sandisk Ultra, not made for dash cam use.

  • Mini 0906 ($130 USD) + No hardwire kit ($0 USD) + Micro SD card ($38.11 USD) = ($168.11 USD) Add a hardwire kit ($11.99 USD) = ($180.10 USD)

    Or you could get:

  • BlackSys CH-100B 2CH ($200 USD) includes Dashcam (Front/Rear) cams + Hardwire kit + 16 GB Micro SD card = ($200 USD)

    I suggest upgrading to a 64/128 GB High Endurance, MLC based card, with error correction. However you can run it out of the box with what is included.

    Anyways, I would shy away from the cheaper 2CH dash cams, they exist, but low build quality.

I have a cord for drawing power from the fuse box, but have yet to try to hook it up. From what I've read the instructions are to plug it into an always-on fuse (pardon the incorrect terminology). I'm not sure if the camera will draw power from the battery constantly, or if it will only draw power if parking mode is enabled (while the car is off). If it's the latter former, I was planning on checking to see if there's a fuse that only delivers power while the car is running.
