No need to apologize. I certainly haven't owned every board out there, so the best I can do is take a look at reviews to feature set with you.

So first, let's decide some things.
Do you want a backlight? If so, does it need to be RGB?

What size board do you prefer? I would suggest going no lower than tenkeyless if you're using it at all for some professional work, only because it could temporarily slow down your work rate because some keys will be in different positions or missing entirely. This may take getting used to. If you're up for that, that's cool too. Full size boards have a numberpad, some are larger with "macro" keys. There are variations with fewer keys, that maybe don't have arrow keys etc. and are slightly smaller. Then there's tenkeyless, which has no numbpad, and then smaller variations often with no function keys or arrow keys, with their functions require key combos.

We've got a price range, and we're going for mechanical, but I'm wondering how much branding and brand names matter to you. There are some boards out there with big logos, and they can be ugly as sin, doesn't affect functionality, but cosmetics are worth considering on something you look at daily. Next, do you need a brand that's "famous?" It may be hard to find a RAZER, Corsair, CoolerMaster, or other big names in the industry under $40, depending on your required feature set.

Finally, that brings us to switch type. There's a lot of brands of switch style, and if I had to guess, you're probably gonna have trouble finding Cherry MX, the most iconic switch type, in this range. That said, some of the "copy" switches are nearly identical and have pretty solid build quality, differences only noticeable by the most sensitive of typists. So here's a quick break down of the most popular switch types:

Blue: Tactile Bump during actuation, can feel it and hear it(loudest switch, clicks on bump, clacks when the key "bottoms out" or is pressed all the way down)

Brown: Very light tactile bump(I don't really feel it if I've just been typing on my blue or Razer green switch board), makes a sound when bottoming out. This is considered the happy medium, somewhat silent, can be made very quiet with an accessory, still had tactile feedback.

Red: Silent, linear switches. Not whisper silent, but much quieter, no noise or tactile bump when the keypress is actuated. I really don't think you'll be able to snag a new board with these.

Black: Silent, almost exactly like reds, but require more force to press down, they're not too popular as people complain they make their fingers tired. However, I see them a lot under budget boards.

The Blue, Brown and Reds are the most common. There are more switches out there, and some brands use different colors to associate the style, but the styles are largely the same.

I'm gonna link(not affiliate links) some boards, just to show the styles and backlighting options off, these are mostly a bit out of your price range, but this should give you a general idea of what they look like, and how much extra things like RGB cost:

Pretty standard tenkeylessboard: https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Water-Resistant-Mechanical-Keyboard-Non-Conflicting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1520206833&sr=8-31&keywords=rgb+mechanical+keyboard

A compact board, I believe it's a 75% variation: https://www.amazon.com/Element-Mechanical-Keyboard-Waterproof-Anti-Ghosting/dp/B01FXF7HFC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1520205858&sr=8-4&keywords=rgb+mechanical+keyboard

Tenkeyless RGB: https://www.amazon.com/Keyboard-Mechanical-Redragon-illuminated-ABS-Metal/dp/B019O9BLVY/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1520205858&sr=8-5&keywords=rgb+mechanical+keyboard

Fullsize board, the standard: https://www.amazon.com/Element-Mechanical-Programmable-Waterproof-Anti-Ghosting/dp/B073QPDZHQ/ref=sr_1_45?ie=UTF8&qid=1520206906&sr=8-45&keywords=rgb+mechanical+keyboard

Now, these are mostly "cheap" brands, in that they're not ultra famous like RAZER, or Corsair, etc. But, these are some of the more highly rated boards. Of course, you absolutely do not have to buy from amazon either, and these are mostly out of the range, so please get back to me on the style and backlighting options you'd like. I think one of these "knock off" brands will be your best bet, particularly if you want backlighting. Other users are of course free to offer advice too.

Once you tell me, generally, the size, and switch type we're after, we can try to find some boards that are on sale, not just the stuff I quickly found that was relatively cheap and well reviewed. Sometimes you can get something that seems a decent price, for even less if you watch and wait. So that might be worth considering too.

Please let me know your preferences, and I hope my explanations were somewhat clear.

u/RaageFaace · 10 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Maybe Razers and Nipples are a bad combination.

Seriously though, I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe you can grab a cheap one to get you through until Christmas.

Edit: something like this maybe?

u/Metaldrake · 10 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Save yourself like $6 more and get a Tomoko 87, it's actually mechanical.

Or like $10 more and get a Redragon Kumara or magicforce 68.

My TOMOKO keyboard had a dying key. The D key became intermittent, which is a big problem when playing video games. Like heck I'm going to throw out a gift from my parents, though. The keyboard uses generic blue switches, so I bought myself a bag of 50 genuine CherryMX Blues, unsoldered the offending switch, and slapped the new one in there. The genuine key sounds a little different: a gentler "tack" sound than the generics. There were also two plastic posts on the genuine key I had to trim off (no matching holes in the PCB). Otherwise, all is well again, and I've got 49 more switches in reserve for fixes and making my own macro pad.

u/harold_liang · 8 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

Mechanical keyboards are pretty cheap right now so I don't know why someone would buy this. https://www.amazon.ca/VicTsing-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-resistant-Attached/dp/B01DBJTZU2/

u/__PETTYOFFICER117__ · 7 pointsr/quityourbullshit

A $500 PC will beat a PS4 Pro handily, not to mention being able to do other stuff with it.

$600-800 is the sweet spot right now IMO, as you get the best $/performance and it'll be lightning quick not only for gaming, but also for any other computer stuff you use it for.

Here's a parts list for $500, although before you buy anything, head on over to /r/buildapc, and also check out /r/buildapcsales.

As for Windows, if you're a student you can get it for free from Dreamspark, or you can use an old laptop/desktop's Windows 7/8 key.

Also keep in mind that while you can certainly game on a TV, if you don't already have a monitor, you may want to consider that. Also, there are some pretty decent, pretty cheap mechanical keyboards these days, such as this one.

If you wanna know more just lemme know and I can go more in-depth on any of this stuff. This is just a quick overview I threw together.

u/Havavege · 6 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Tomoko 87 TKL and Rosewill PCB double shot key caps both on Amazon. $30 and $12 respectively. Bought the same kit last week!

Switches are Outemu blues.

Edit: I had read reviews before purchasing the board that it used Outemo switches, but I just pulled the keycaps and they're Switch Master blues.

u/nuplsstahp · 5 pointsr/interestingasfuck

You can start out with a nice, budget keyboard like the magicforce 68 or tomoko 87. the magicforce has a weird name but it's a really neat 68 key layout and is available with Gateron switches which are arguably some of the best out there.

I would also recommend picking up a switch tester to see which switch type you like the best (red=light linear, brown=light tactile, blue=light clicky, black=heavy linear, clear=heavy tactile, green=heavy clicky).

Then you can surrender completely and shell out $500 on a korean custom with GMK hyperfuse and a cable nicer than most people's living rooms.

Has humanity gone too far? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For real though. I've been using split ergonomic keyboards for over two decades. My wrists like them better, because they are not awkwardly bent, but straight while typing. Plus my shoulders don't clench up that much.

My previous keyboard were regular rubber domes, some with scissors switches. I switched to a cheap mechanical keyboard some months ago. It was a cheap 22€ tenkeyless. The switches felt great and clicky, although they weren't highly regarded. I got another board with brown switches and RGB LEDs (Anne Pro), they were even more comfortable to type on, but I wanted an ergonomically split board for a more relaxed typing experience.

u/ddeerrtt5 · 4 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

A TOMOKO 87 key... not very good but you gotta start somewhere! Here

u/Abiacere · 4 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Amazon has dozens of mechanical keyboards for $30-50. You really can’t go wrong, but here’s some that stand out:

  • Qisan Magicforce 68.: Excellent build quality, especially for $38. Cherry switches aren’t worth the $20 premium IMO.
  • Tomoko tenkeyless: Decent build quality and blue switches; should be good for typing. At $26 it’s not much more expensive than a switch tester.
  • Anne Pro: RGB and Bluetooth for only $70.

Except for Cooler Master, name-brand gaming boards (e.g. Logitech, Corsair, Steelseries) are only as good or even worse than budget options. Unless you’re stuck in one brand’s RGB lighting ecosystem, avoid them at all costs.
u/cassadyamore · 4 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

If you live alone or with people that don't mind noise, you can try a Tomoko or MagicForce with blue switches. It's usually better to go with blue for cheap ones, because the sharp TICK they create usually covers up any scratchy or gritty feeling a quieter key might have.

No frills Tomoko for $35 that I've been typing on for half a year, works well so far. Can be very loud though.

Magicforce 68 is a compact budget board highly recommended by a lot of mech key fans. You can get a full-size with num-pad and Gateron switches for $70 or with Cherry for more.

Velocifire is a brand I know far less about, but they sell a full-size brown switch board with over 300 reviews that consist of mostly positive feedback. I have no idea what brand the switches on this one are, they make some other full-size boards with Kailh switches.

u/fullcircle_bflo · 4 pointsr/buildapcsales

Blue Switch TKL for like a dollar more if you need them clicky switches.

u/SpamShadow · 4 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Its a Tomoko 87
https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-Resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1486913242&sr=8-5&keywords=mechanical+keyboard

It uses Switch Master switches, made by Huano
https://deskthority.net/wiki/Switch_Master_Blue

You could get a new keyset, check places like WASD or Geekkeys for some reasonably priced ones. I picked up a set of white on Banggood for $12 shipped that as passable. If you REALLY wanted to customize it, get different switches for it.

u/alose · 4 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

At that price range, you are really better to buy new, as most any decent keyboard will be more than $50 used, and I would not trust any budget keyboard that was on the used market. And at $50, forget about RGB.

We highly recommend dropping the number pad and using a TKL or smaller keyboard. You are literally hurting yourself by using a fullsize if you are a right handed mouse user. Either you are putting undo strain on your shoulder by reaching far out to the right, or undo strain on your wrist my shifting your typing area to the left.

If you still want a fullsize in spite of our recommendations, then an Eagletec is probably the best option.

A Redragon, Tomoko, or Magicforce are probably the best in your price range. I would recommend the Magicforce over the others.

For the giveaway:

I want to build a Let's Split with 185g Cherristotle switches and blank SA caps! I'm also going to try to cram a Raspberry Pi 0w running Arch Linux inside the case. I'd like to make the case and plate out of wood and sleeve my own cables.

I bought the Let's Split PCBs and rpi0w months ago and am finally getting around to ordering all the other parts. In the meantime, this is my only other keyboard: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DBJTZU2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've soldered together other electronics projects before, but this will be my first DIY keyboard.

u/league_of_fail · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

> But to eacg their own.

That reminds me of the time I tried blank keycaps :)

MagicForce68 was my first Massdrop purchase and I found the smaller format required too much hunting and pecking due to change in key positions and f-layer use. I bought a cheap (~$25) Tomoko87 on Amazon and loved it enough to buy a couple more to try modding different switches (haven't gotten around to it yet) and for my work computer.

u/pianogamer005 · 3 pointsr/macsetups

It's a cheap Tomoko 87 key keyboard with custom NPKC blank white key caps (got them from Massdrop, they're kinda hard to find otherwise)

u/The-slunk · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I think the tomoko 87s go for under $40, they have decent reviews.

Here you go

u/Money8991 · 3 pointsr/linuxmasterrace

This is a knock off of Cherry MX Blue switches, but it's pretty good, albeit a bit bare-bones (no lighting or numpad) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apip_Zpk5IvAKxoHln

u/Krackurs · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I've been wanting to buy a mechanical keyboard because some of my laptop keys are falling off and I find buying one would be a meaningful investment when I can afford a custom built desktop. So far, for a really budget keyboard (<$50), I have been thinking about this Magicforce 68 and this Tomoko one (both blue switches). I have heard a lot of good things about Magicforce 68. If I get this one with subpar a switch, will I be able to upgrade it in the future? I like the Tomoko one because it is cheap and doesn't have very bad quality for its price. Any suggestions?

u/CrowsOfWar · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I'm looking for a mechanical keyboard with blank keycaps. I have already looked at some Das keyboards but they're rather expensive... I'd prefer under $100.

I was thinking about buying a Tomoko keyboard and then replacing the keycaps with these. Would that work?

Thanks

u/dandu3 · 3 pointsr/retrobattlestations

There's these, I don't think that they make classic looking ones lol

However you might as well go for a real mechanical for 10$ more if you don't mind not having a numpad

u/hellosethhh · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

First off, welcome!

A great board to look at for starters would probably be the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid; they routinely go on sale for about 60$ with blue or brown switches.

There are some other branded keyboards you can find on Amazon that use other switches (such as Kailh, Gateron, "Switch Master")
Link for Reference

Another good place to grab a sale would be Massdrop however this site is more of a group buy for different products; you sacrifice shipping for a cheaper cost.

Hope this helps!

u/aBoatfromKhuul · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Idk about the cheapest, but these are both only $40 dollars with prime, and around $50 with shipping without prime. I can personally vouch for the one that has blacks and say that its pretty damn good. Not even just good for $40, its just damn good.

There is also this that is a few bucks cheaper and is more of an 80% keyboard if thats your thing.

u/the_wakeful · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Got this keyboard on amazon for $35. Cherry Blue knockoffs. Blue keyset from elitekeyboards.com and LoD key from WASDkeyboards.com

Couldn't be happier with the result.

u/nafs_asp · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Don't listen to that other dude. There are waterproof mechanical keyboards out there. I believe some TG3 and Data911 keyboards have a sheet of plastic in them over the switches to protect from water/spills. Those boards would have been used in police squad cars and the like.

I'm not sure if all the models are mechanical, but here's an example of one: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/1ncdsd/reviewphotostg3_data911/

u/DouglasHufferton, also remembered about this: https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-MMC023-Mechanical-Keyboard-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2, not sure how well it works, but I'm sure you can find reviews/tests of it

u/dermixxer · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

By the looks of it, I assume its a Tomoko 87.

While it doesn't have MX-Blues, those switches are definetly decent for a first board (does it say "Switchmaster" on the switch housing?).

u/tielknight · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

Looks to be the cheapest of the budget mech boards currently available as they are usually right around $30.

TKL = No Number Pad.

Looks like the same keyboard as this one from Tomoko that is $35 https://smile.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-Resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2

There's also one with a dinged-up box from Amazon Warehouse for ~$21.59 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01KFU7EP8/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

Considered a chinese keyboard?

I have both of these:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01H1QK9WY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And I also have a Razer Black widow 2013 with Cherry MX Blues and I personally use the CK104 over the Black widow. I'll be the first to admit that I am not a mechanical keyboard enthusiast but I find the knockoff blues in these chinese keyboards to be at least comparable to the cherry's.

u/dwellufool · 2 pointsr/buildapc

i'll try to keep this organized:

  1. You do not need and aftermarket cooler for a non-OC build

  2. You do not need a case fan, most towers comes with plenty, but you can check the specific case

  3. That is a very overpriced case, but if you are willing to spend extra just for looks go for it. I might suggest an NZXT H440 over that

  4. That mobo is made for SLI (two GPUs linked together) hence the name. MSI has other gaming mobos that are closer to $80-$100 if you want to do a full-sized tower, but again, that's a cost spike with little to no performance increase. At least it gives more breathing room in a full-sized ATX case

  5. honestly forgot about the thermal paste. i have so much laying around i never think about buying it anymore. Arctic Silver is the way to go

So here's that version of the build

If you're talking mechanical keyboards that's an entire world on its own, each different switch giving a different result. Check out /r/mechanicalkeyboards

I've used a g.skill mouse for 5 years and don't mind it, but i'm not bothered by clickyness. I've heard good things about corsair mechanical keyboards, but I use a cheap blue-switch because of its stupid value and because it lacks a numpad and is easy to clean. if you want quality you'll be spending closer to $100 on a mechanical keyboard and $35-$50 on a mouse
u/swordknight · 2 pointsr/mechmarket

If you cant find a used one, this tomoko board has been picking up some traction lately as a decent cheap board. this magicforce also for a more compact layout. You'll likely have to buy new keycaps for either, but otherwise they seem very solid as far as <45 goes.

u/bovineblitz · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

This board is a decent deal mainly because of the keycaps. I'd say if you want a cheaper entry level, go with one of these with blue switches: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DBJTZU2/

Build quality is there, you're just getting the Outemu switches . I personally think they're better than Cherry. IMO, the better deal is to buy that board then look into buying a set of PBT keycaps that appeal to you.

I think the Caps/Num/Scroll lock LEDs look terrible on the Cooler Master board, but it looks like its LED backlight-bro lighting is pretty good if that sort of thing floats your boat.

u/YouBetterBelieber · 2 pointsr/gadgets
u/SwimmingAshes · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

If you want a cheap mechanical board, try your luck at a nearby thrift store or recycling center. You might find a nice vintage mech like a Dell AT-101W and you'll probably pay less than $10

Otherwise I have heard good things about this Tomoko board on Amazon.

It's a pretty cheap board. It's a nice first mech. But I would recommend the Magiforce if you can spend a little more money.

u/spamyak · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Honestly, whether or not it could depend on how you type, what you currently type on, and what is currently limiting you. Many mechanical keyboards could even be slower for you.

These keyboard can be had in the $30 range if you search "mechanical keyboard" on Amazon, but most people here probably recommend ~$100 boards (like Cooler Master MasterKeys) as "entry level". This keyboard has an aluminum case and has audibly clicky blue switches (search 'typing on MX blue' on YouTube), but the keycaps it comes with are made of thin cheap ABS that will become shiny quickly.

u/Nekryyd · 2 pointsr/GamerGhazi

Well, since KBM = Godmode...

Why not just enable KBM support by default on console?

For about the same price as a new controller you could hunt around and find a playable KBM set up.

Even in the article you cite, the game's director only says that it should be either/or, he does not rule out KBM. He only says that if a console is going to have KBM input, it should be plug and play and equally accessible.

BTW:

> There's no major difference between a $20 mouse and a $200 mouse except some more buttons, a few LEDS and the branding.

You are drawing the absolutely wrong comparison. Some products are all about branding and style and are definitely WAY overpriced (ahem), but there is a distinct difference between playing on this, and this(anti-ghosting is more important at really high competitive levels and players can be picky about an AG layout, but it's less important than the fact that mechanical keys offer much better options for tactile feedback and are almost universally more precise). And a MASSIVE difference between this and this. That gaming mouse has SIX TIMES (including scroll wheel button) the amount of buttons as the normal mouse. This is literally the difference between going from the face buttons of an original NES controller to the number of buttons and triggers on modern controllers. Sure, you could try and cluster as many functions as close to your left hand as possible, but having them all right at your thumb is a massive difference, to say nothing of the on-the-fly DPI adjustments that many gaming mice have (EG - most commonly used to instantly switch between high and low sensitivity settings for better sniping).

I personally have a blue-switch KB that is immensely satisfying to type on and is great for gaming (particularly when doing something, like a dash, that requires a double-tap of a key). I hope to never have to go back to a membrane KB.

As far as my mouse goes, I paid something like $50 for a mouse that has 8 programmable buttons and a DPI switch for up to 4 different DPI settings (though I only use two). It was a huge advantage over my old mouse for the shooter I was playing at the time (Planetside 2, an MMOFPS).

So I'll circle back to what I originally said and will restate that I think the decision at the hardware level to exclude KBM was an ill-thought "walled garden" approach to protecting controller sales. Again, if your cited article is to be believed, Microsoft may end up opening up KBM support. It only makes sense because media entertainment devices, such as consoles, are converging with the set-top HTPC/video box market.

Hell, again, per your article, Sony even already offers a keypad/mouse combo.

Spend $10 more and get genuine Cherry mx switches or spend less and get Cherry clone switches.

edit. Better price

u/SwammerDo · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Should be decent. It looks like a rebrand of this Tomoko keyboard which is well known as a good keyboard for the price.

u/Cloakedbug · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

The most responsive switch IMO is Topre, like sex for your fingertips. No Cherry Mx switch can even come close.

However, 55g Realforce (long live the king) baselines at like 230 USD.

Blues are for lack of a better word, sort of “fun.” Satisfying click, like playing with a toy.

A good cheap blue starter got me into Mech keyboards and could give you an example on the louder end of things.

Mechanical feel is still membrane, though. Meaning you have to bottom out a key in order to activate the switch. Mechanical doesn't make you do that. Swing by your local Best Buy or other retailer, try a couple mechanical switch keyboards out. And here, have a link to a super cheap mechanical clicky keyboard from Amazon:

Just a heads up (I'm not the guy you replied to but I'm chiming in), Logitech uses their own switches in their boards. It's this weird ass gaming switch that some people like and most hate. It's also incompatible with most keycaps, so you cant swap things over.

Personally, I would either get the key tester (I keep mine on my desk to fiddle with when I'm thinking of a solution to a problem) or a super cheap board. Here is a decent tenkeyless mechanical keyboard with blue switches. They'll be the best typing experience (depending on your preference) and it's a good starting point to see if you want to get further in. Another suggestion would be to get a keyboard with red or black switches, as they're quieter, so you could use it for work if you decide to get a better keyboard for home in the future.

at the price of the ducky one, I wouldn't buy it unless you either know exactly what switch you want (try switch testers, maybe borrow a friend's board for a few hours, see if you like their switches), or if you're going to pick a pretty middle of the road switch that everyone likes (Blacks, browns, blues etc.). In my case it wasn't till after I bought my magicforce that I realised that though I love the feel of blues, I'm not too keen on the click.

There are so many nice keyboards out there in the sub $100 range, and you may find something like the keyboard I've linked you fits your fancy well on a budget (if just to get you into the game so you can buy what you know you want later.)

> Keyboard: Cheapest tenkeyless keyboard with Cherry MX Red switches.

For whatever it's worth /u/grantthecreator - you could scrape $20+ off that Cherry MX Keyboard by going with one of those generic/knockoff TKL boards. They're everywhere, including Amazon w/ Prime.

If a budget was stopping you from a substantial CPU/GPU "tier jump" (I see you stretched for the 3800X), I would probably try to find that "loose change" elsewhere in the build and apply it there. In this particular build, I'd DEFINITELY try to find the few bucks for the 2060 Super over the OG 2060.

https://www.amazon.com/Redragon-KUMARA-Backlit-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B016MAK38U/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_147_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=FR19RDK6PSJNTACCR3JS

And so on...there are tons of them.

I have over a year's worth of personal experience with one ("EagleTac" TKL w/ fake Blues from Amazon) on my GF's rig. She works from home often, types for school, and games on it - it gets used. It's still good as new - both the switches and lights. I've used it for typing and gaming and think it's absolutely fine. I was/am quite impressed with it for under $30.

If my reference point in PC's matters - I'm on higher-end stuff (2080 + dual 34" 21:9's - AW3418DW) and have been exclusively using Cherry MX's for years in K65/K95/Pok3r's...

u/Pontius_Pilot_ · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Do you know if you like blue style switches? If you have a Microcenter near you you can test the switches out.

IMO, blue style and brown style are the most "normal." I have Cherry MX browns in mine and I love it. When I tested the blues, I liked them as well, however, I wasn't a fan of the click sound.

Having never had this keyboard, $20 isn't a bad intro, but I wouldn't expect much. It would be a good way to see if you like mechanical keyboards or not.

Edit: the layout I put together

u/Azzmo · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

This keyboard came in yesterday and the keys had a hollow resonance. On a whim I popped the PCP out and shaped a few pieces of EcoSilent Underlayment leftover from installing the floors. Squeezed the PCB back in and screwed it down and, though the Outemu Blues are clicky as ever, the hollow echo is completely gone. The PCB is squeezed in tight against the underlayment and I have no idea if this will blow up my house but I'm risking it. Maybe someone can chime in and say if this is a bad idea.

I regret that the photos look so bad. The phone will be disciplined. Keyboard is VicTsing Mechanical cheap off Amazon.

u/CoronerDonut · 1 pointr/battlestations

The keyboard itself is a cheap tenkeyless with Outemu blue switches that I got for ~$28 on sale: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DBJTZU2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It seems to go in and out of stock, it's currently unavailable. The logo can apparently be removed with nail polish remover and patience, although I haven't tried that yet.

The keycaps are Cherry profile PBT caps from Aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/NPKC-Blank-side-printed-Cherry-Profile-Thick-PBT-Keycap-ANSI-ISO-layout-For-Cherry-MX-Switches/32807123075.html. I ended up getting a Tomoko MMC023 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DBJTZU2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) figuring for $35 it would be hard to go wrong. I just took it out of the box 5 minutes ago and I already love it. This is the exact feel I was looking for. Only annoying thing is that I have to run an app called Karabiner to remap the function keys to the standard Mac media keys, and I'll still need to get new keycaps, but this is a really great board. Granted there's no numpad so I'll probably get a separate numpad, probably a bluetooth one so I can just hide it until I need it.

I just noticed it this morning and am using my old logitech G510 which works flawlessly. I purchased the Tomoko tenkeyless a few days ago and it arrived on Sunday. The X key is the one that is giving me issues at the moment. Like I mentioned, all the other keys work as intended, so I'm not quite sure what the issues is, except for that something might've dropped in the mechanism, thus making it not respond to being pressed. <https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DBJTZU2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1>

Here's a nice, sub-$30 tenkeyless with Outemu blue (clicky) switches.

Here's a sub-$40 full size with Outemu brown (tactile, no click) switches. It has teal colored backlighting, but that should be easily disabled if you don't need it.

These should show how overpriced popular modern gaming mechs are when there's equal performance at over a hundred bucks less elsewhere.

Here's all of the decent cheap ones I have saved on amazon. Only problem is that I think they're all cherry blue (replica) switches, so they're all pretty loud. Also, these are all tenkeyless because no one needs number pads unless they do data entry, and they take up a lot of space. I've had the tomoko keyboard on this list for about 2 years now and it's still in perfect condition.

So, I am thinking of dipping my toe in mechanical keyboards, as both my laptop and desktop cheap-o keyboards suck, and strain my wrists.

I am in the US, and I am a bit on a budget. I am looking at amazon (things like this or this). I am looking for a simple design and don't care about the backlight and other "pro-gaming" features. I just need a decent keyboard for typing (writing and coding). Would like to go with a smaller size (tenkeyless perhaps), but I am open to anything with arrow keys, up to full-size.

My biggest question is can I change keys on those cheaper mechanical keyboards? They technically have cherry MX (mostly blue) switches, so I think I can just get cherryMX keysets and they will fit. Right?

I tried looking through wiki, but its feels pretty byzantine and not very newbie friendly.

u/PickleTitWhore · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

Hm ok. I would recommend you go to your nearest Microcenter/Fry’s/other DIY PC store and test out what types of switches you like best.

OR

You could order a cheap mech kb with cherry clones from Amazon to try out for a while before splurging on an expensive one. Most of the highly reviewed clones on Amazon are Gaterons, Outemus, or Kaihls.

Here’s a blue clone (unsure of what type exactly) that some of my friends have used with good reviews

u/Pontus_Pilates · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I don't know if there is anything to add, but there are mechanical keyboards available that are spill-resistant. They have holes in the case to let the fluid through.

A cheapo like this would be an example.

I'm so confused as to why theyre named differently but its clearly the same board right?

Anyways, as far as gimmicks on keyboard and mouse promotions, I personally just care for the feel. I liked the optical switches on that celeritas II so I just wanted to find something similar to it. I have a cheap ass Tokomo keyboard I've been using for near 3 years and I love that shit lol. Maybe I'm weird... I prefer it even over my Logitech g610 and g710+. I treat my mouse the same way. I just got my VicTsing TKL board with Outemu Blue switches from Amazon for 25€. (Edit: It's named TOMOKO 87 Key Mechanical Keyboard on Amazon.com) It only took the usual two days although Friday was a legal holiday in Germany.

I got it to practice soldering in the future and I didn't want to destroy the POK3R I want to get really soon.

I am actually surprised of the weight and build quality of this keyboard. It has a metal case which in combination with the clicky switches leads to some pinging noise but I think it's not too bad. I am just typing on the board and I already feel "at home" :D I guess this keyboard will help with my sleep schedule because now I can not sit at the computer deep into the night anymore without disturbing anyone. But as I said I will order some switches and practice soldering on it.

Edit: Even with a 450°C soldering iron I couldn't desolder anything. Project is on hold for now.

>What is a layered acrylic case?

A case made up of layers of acrylic 😛. Most keyboard cases now are injection molded plastic or, on the higher end, milled aluminum. Layered (or sandwich) cases are made up of 3-4 thin layers of something, usually acrylic or a mix of acrylic and aluminum. I have a layered case on a board right now that has an aluminum bottom with an acrylic mid layer and an acrylic plate. Because the case is just a few things layers, these tend to be some of the thinnest cases.

>I guess it's just a comfort thing. I have to use a PIN frequently throughout the day. I could buy a stand-alone numpad though as you have suggested. I thought about the ergonomic benefits of having the mouse closer to the keyboard by using a TKL. The only TKL I tried was a cheap one from amazon. It was nice but the return key was oddly shaped so I was put off by it. Other than that it was just a muscle memory issue.

The return key looks pretty standard in the amazon pictures... What was weird about it?

I have a standalone numpad that I pull out when I need to do some data entry. I also usually put it on the left side when I use it so that I don't have to move my mouse over. It takes a little getting used to, but it's certainly not hard!

>I wouldn't be opposed to this. Another one of those habitual things though. It could also be the reason for my wrist pain though. I'm so used to putting the meat of my palms on the wrist rest.

It's almost definitely the cause of the problem. I'd keep a wrist rest around and just try to consciously think about it. Maybe set a timer somewhere just to remind you to think about it. Retraining old habits keeps you sharp 😉

> Any layered acrylic case should be as short or shorter than your K70 , though the only fullsize one I can think of at the moment is the winkeyless fullsize board.

What is a layered acrylic case?

> Also, as a former Linux HPC admin/current dev who works in Linux all day, do you really need a full-size? For network admin work I could see the numpad being handy for IPs, but that's about it. You could also do an external numpad if you really needed one. Breaking away from full-size really opens up options for lower boards. The magicforce, for example, sits really low.

I guess it's just a comfort thing. I have to use a PIN frequently throughout the day. I could buy a stand-alone numpad though as you have suggested. Although you do make some good points I would like to add that there are some solid mechanical keyboards for only 30 dollars these days. For example this is the keyboard I use here, its nothing crazy and although a lot of people don't like blue keys for gaming but I like it. On the other side of the coin, I use a very cheap mouse(the one here) and I find it quite satisfactory as long as you don't need programmable keys or anything.

Keyboard: Any mechanical keyboard; the Tomoko mechanical keyboard is a great budget board. If you have a bit more money to spend, the razer blackwidow and corsair k70 are great keyboards.

Mouse: I'd recommend the logitech g402 or g502 for a great ergonomic, gaming mouse. You can also go with any of the many razer mice if you don't need so many buttons.

The i5 7500 and GTX 1060 will be able to play the most demanding FPS games at 60FPS+ at ultra or almost ultra settings at 1080p. I also included a 120GB SSD for your OS and games. You really don't need the aftermarket cooler on there, but stock cooler might get a bit too loud and too hot under heavy load.

Can't get to the article from work but this TOMOKO keyboard is really nice for how cheap it is. Build quality is great and the keycaps are actually double shot molded! I bought it as my work keyboard and would recommend it to anyone.

https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1536608434&sr=8-14&keywords=mechanical+keyboard

Most of the stuff that you will find in the lower price bracket will have some sort of gaming spin to it. I have not looked too much at that price range, but you could also consider the TOMOKO 87 Key. I have seen several people post good things about it. It also looks fairly plain, which would be a plus for your needs.

u/Khar-Selim · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

So I'm looking for a bottom-of-the-barrel keyboard with blues to try out the idea of using blues for gaming before I commit to something higher-end and regret it. Figure if I don't like blues for gaming I can just use this one as a reserve board for coding, as I do like the feel of blues. Does this look like a good keyboard to try?

u/waffleking_ · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

This might not really fit with the whole "office" look, but it's a decent cheap keyboard. I've seen some reviews say it's pretty good for $40

This looks much better, but I haven't seen any reviews about it.

u/UltraFlyingTurtle · 1 pointr/buildapc

Hey, thanks for testing it. I appreciate it. You've may have convinced me to get one, too. Not to type faster but for quality of life reasons, since I have my fingers all day on the keyboard, might as well make them feel nicer, too. :)

I always get confused with all the talk of switches. I've seen some knockoffs on Amazon, which seem to a good gateway keyboard, in the $30 to $40 range. They seem to be variants of blue switches, which I don't know are any good.

u/flick3d · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Simpler question than the way I worded it previously: are the "Tomoko MMC023" or "MechanicalEdge Z-77" decent enough options at $CA55-60? Close to half the price of the alternative. Links below. While a competitive gamer, I'm hardly a pro.

Tomoko: https://www.amazon.ca/TOMOKO-Water-Resistant-Mechanical-Keyboard-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1473283185&sr=8-2&keywords=mechanical+keyboard

I have one of these if you're interested. It's just a basic mechanical and was my first one. It's got Blue switches and for my first it felt amazing. Water resistant. Used it about two weeks straight and then got one with 10-key instead. It's small and great construction. It's actually a really cool keyboard.

TOMOKO MMC023 87-Key USB Wired Mechanical Keyboard with Blue Switch, Anti-ghosting Keys - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_8.dzxbYB3WZAY

I'd sell it for $25 shipped if you're interested.

u/swedishmatthew · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Is this keyboard any good? The price is very reasonable, but I don't know this brand..

u/ratsroloc · 1 pointr/keyboards

Honestly given the range of your budget it might be a better idea to save up a bit more for a Filco Majestouch TKL or a Leopold FC750R. Both boards seem to be really well received on this sub in terms of build quality, they aren't that much more than $100, and they come in a variety of switch types.

But if you're just looking for something as cheap as possible to replace your current board you might want to look into something like this. You could also look on /r/mechmarket to try to find a used Quickfire TK to replace the one you have.

u/AClassyBear · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I bought this for $60 Canadian but it's only $36 USD which seems like a very good price to me

u/sharkvszombie · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I use a pok3r on my development machine and love it but if you are curious about mech keyboards I ordered this one for my gaming machine because of the price. I expected it to be bad because a lot of the reviews look like they are people that got the item for free but I figured it was amazon so if it sucked I could send it back. It uses some off brand switches but they feel fine and so far it is a great mechanical keyboard for the price, it isn't going to replace my pok3r with mx browns anytime soon but I would take it over a razer product.

u/mithikx · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Amazon.ca
You can find a few choices for under $45 Canadian from what I've seen.

This is the cheapest non-full sized mechanical keyboard I saw on Amazon.ca (https://www.amazon.ca/Mechanical-Water-Resistant-Adjustable-Backlight-Anti-ghosting/dp/B075LGGFJD/) IDK anything about it other than it's ugly.

I'd recommend spending about $5 CDN more and getting this TKL from TOMOKO it has Gaote Blue switches which are Cherry MX Blue clones so they're clicky which is something to consider if noise is an issue.

At that price point there's also the Redragon K552-N which have some sort of green switch.

u/Nakotadinzeo · 1 pointr/RetroFuturism

The good stuff always is, that pen is $25.92 after inflation.

This starter mechanical keyboard is only $30. Granted, it has clone blue switches and not a lot of features but it's better than a rubber dome.

There are even cheaper models if you don't mind losing the 10-key, like this one. which is only a few cents off that pen.

A lot of manufacturers are starting to make clone switches instead of using real cherries now. Even Razer which drives the price lower.

u/my_reddit_persona · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I'm looking to ease into MK with a cheap intro TKL keyboard (but not 60%, I want to keep discrete fn keys). Based on what I've read about the switches, I think I want to start with brown as a midpoint between clicky blues and no tac blacks.

I find plenty of $40 blue keyboards (Redragon K552) (TOMOKO-MMC023), etc, and at least one black (LINGBAO JIGUANSHI Gaming Keyboard 87 Keys), some of them well reviewed online.

Problem is I'm having trouble finding browns at that price point. The closest I've found is $25 more @ $65 for this Team Wolf ZhuQue 87 key Brown

Does anyone have a lead on a brown switch keyboard closer to $40 shipped?

Any reason you are looking for a rubber dome TKL?

There are mechanical keyboards that are getting pretty cheap these days.

Here is a TKL Blue Switch keyboard for $35: https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-Resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2

u/burghinator · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Here's one for less than $40. Imitation blue switches and no backlighting but very good reviews from what I've seen

u/DobbyDude · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Heres one,another,a third

Personally now that I have been using a mechanical for over a year I'm so used to it that it pains me to use anything else.

Also if you live near a Best Buy they should have some on display that you can try so you can see what switches you like and if it is worth it to you.

u/sandmyth · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

If you don't need a number pad, http://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Water-Resistant-Mechanical-Keyboard-Non-Conflicting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ is great and cheap, also very loud.

EDIT: also, no annoying backlight to pay for. If you have to look at the keyboard to type, don't bother buying much besides a cheap-o keyboard, because, what's the point in getting anything nicer?

u/Aimbot69 · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

The TOMOKO keyboard is cheap and really is a great low/no budget mechanical to start with.

u/KingHyp3 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Heres a decent Blue: https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Water-Resistant-Mechanical-Keyboard-Non-Conflicting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1518455105&sr=8-8&keywords=cherry+mx+blue

The bundles are weird. Having a higher quality mouse rather than a higher quality keyboard is better, so stay away from the bundles.

u/Thatisdifficult · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

I second the Dell Optiplex.

Here's one for $150. It includes an i5 3550, 8GB of ram, a 500GB HDD, an optical drive, and Windows 10 Pro. A very good deal that will overcome the overpriced ram problem.

Here's a $90 1080p, 60Hz, IPS monitor.

Here's a $225 GTX 1050 Ti (MSRP: $140). All graphics cards above a GT 1030 are overpriced right now.

Here's a $95 Samsung 860 EVO 250GB SSD. You can clone the operating system on the HDD to it.

Here's a $27 blue switch mechanical keyboard. (or if you want a more silent keyboard get this $40 brown switch keyboard).

You may want to replace the power supply. Here's a good one for $50.

      Total: $637

I'm sorry, but you will have to forgo having a blue case with LEDs and a side-window if you wish to have a decent PC at or below your $700 budget. Good luck building!
u/Hotel_ · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I would consider <$50 for both kb and mouse to be a fairly affordable price. Check out /r/mechanicalkeyboards for an entire list, but I have two Tomoko87 (aka mpow mechanical kb) keyboards and love them. Got one for $20 and one for $30-ish iirc. https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Water-Resistant-Mechanical-Keyboard-Non-Conflicting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1519531778&sr=1-1&keywords=tomoko+87 And the larger version with a num pad can be had for $40-ish if you search hard enough. https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01IHVN4GA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1519531805&sr=1-1&keywords=tomoko+104 They are blue switches which I love for gaming and typing, but it's all subjective. Go to bestbuy and test some out to see what type of switch you like the most.

As for mice, I personally love logitech. I've only owned 3 models because they simply have lasted forever and i've never had to replace them. I do have experience with those cheap $10 "gaming mice" and I will say they are better than a wireless mouse or non-gaming mouse. If you want to buy a decent KB and save up for a great mouse then you can find CyberpowerPC ripoff mice for like $12 just about anywhere and it will last you a while until you find the mouse you want. https://www.amazon.com/Programmable-EasySMX-V18-Non-slip-Computer/dp/B073CG5BPH/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519531619&sr=8-1&keywords=cyberpowerpc+mouse

In my biased opinion, this is my favorite cheap gaming mouse https://www.amazon.com/G203-Prodigy-Wired-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B01M26YUKO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1519531846&sr=8-3&keywords=logitech+gaming+mouse

Corsair/steelseries/etc. all make similar mice that are basically the same thing. I think of it as a kind of minimalist design. great for casual gaming. I am using the G502 just because i love heavy mice and I can save button shortcuts to the mouse itself so it works with my pc and mac...and rgb bro

Just a suggestion, I own a tomoko blue switch keyboard. It's surprisingly well built and my favorite keyboard so far. You may want to check it out. [Link here] (https://www.amazon.com/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-Resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2)

Between this: and this, which is better? If neither, is there another >$50 one you can reccomend?

u/FuckingSticks · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I got this as my first mechTomoko

If you don't mind knock off switches you can't really beat the price. In the year I've owned it it's been consistent and reliable. If you search around the subreddit you'll find other peoples review on it.

u/JessicaCelone · 1 pointr/bapcsalescanada

Its definitely a big step up, and in a vacuum I'd say its worth the money, but considering you can get a cheap mechanical keyboard [for ~$40] (https://www.amazon.ca/TOMOKO-Mechanical-Keyboard-Water-resistant-Anti-ghosting/dp/B01DBJTZU2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1484983472&sr=1-1&keywords=tomoko), its a little less worth it.
