I take this to mean design in the classical greek sense as espoused by Vivitius {Marcus Vitruvius Pollio} {0} and his series, 10 Books on Architecture {De architectura} {1].

Vivitius is cited {2} with coining the phrase, 'firmitas, utilitas, venustas' which roughly translated, means designing something that has a balance of durablity, functionality and aesetics. The correct balance of the three is the essence of good design of good design for most things.
