I'm a very big fan of the Autel Robotics X-Star Premium

The premium version has double the range but the other differences are minor.

If long range is more important to you, consider a DJI Phantom 4, which also features a 4K video, 12MP still camera. DJI offers a collision avoidance feature, but I honestly haven't ran into a situation where I wish I had it. I believe both models offer sonar based soft landings, and it's incredible to watch these land as if there is an invisible pillow softly catching them.

I chose Autel Robotics over DJI because I really like the 1-button landing feature that lets me land within 12 inches of my takeoff spot if I ever get into a panic situation. More importantly, I chose the Autel Robotics model because the camera gimbal assembly is removable and upgradable. They're expecting to start offering a FLIR (multi-spectral infrared) camera upgrade and a 20.2 MP upgrade available sometime this year.

As far as I know, both the Autel and DJI offerings have features that let you set waypoints to fly a predetermined path and program custom circular orbits around objects for capturing imagery in the center of the orbit. My only minor gripe is that I wish Autel Robotics would let me fly in a tighter radius.

Both companies let you load their apps on your phone/tablet for free, so feel free to take the apps for a test drive before you purchase. Also be sure to watch some tutorials on youtube. Each company has great training material. The most important feature you'll want to use will likely be flying in circular orbits. Here's a short video that shows how it is done.

If this is your first drone, your only regret will be waiting so long to get into the hobby.

> Well you're wrong. It is much thinner and lighter ...

Phantom 4 Pro is 3.06 pounds (source). Autel X-Star is 3.20 pounds (source). So you are wrong.

It's the Autel Robotics X-Star Premium. I'm an absolute drone novice; before yesterday I had just watched a couple videos and hadn't researched any different models and had never really planned on buying something like this, but I am blown away by this thing. It's really smart, camera is excellent, and distance, flight time, and other specs all seem to be commiserate with top of the line models. I also love that the color stands out against the sky, unlike what seems to be the typical drone color of white.

Today I just took a few videos and tried to learn how to fly it well enough so that I'll be comfortable enough to take it off beginner mode next time I take it out. I think I'm going to head to White Rock Lake with it next.

Picture above was just me clicking the picture button; I didn't go into the settings at all, so I'm sure you could get it looking better than that.

EDIT: Here's one of the videos I took. I set it to stop me at 300ft, but that bridge span is at 400, and it looks like I'm even with it. Not sure if I did something wrong and I was actually at a higher altitude or if I'm just not really that high and the angle makes it look like I'm even with the top of the span.

Autel's X-Star Premium has a removable camera system with already a decent camera, and two higher end options coming soon.

1" sensor and a dual camera/FLIR combo
