The Dark Millennium book (part of the 7th Edition box set) states that humanity is on the edge of evolving into a fully psychic race that could keep the Warp at bay without the Emperor. Although the book does question whether humans will be able to make this leap without destroying themselves...or at least in time for them to not be ovetaken by Chaos upon the death of the Emperor (which seems imminent at this point).

I can find the exact quote tonight if you would like. It's really more of a few sentence blurb...but one that seems put there to avoid GW having to completely destroy the Galaxy if there is an End Times equivalent event in 40k.

This is what I bought about two weeks ago to see if I really wanted to get into the hobby. The reason I like that set is because it comes with all the paints and a brush you need. The models are all push fit so you don't need any glue. If you have a pair of clippers at home you're in business. Here's the tutorial video how to paint them

I'd recommend this over anything else for beginners because unlike all the Start Collecting packs, this actually includes all the paint you need to create what's on the box. And the price is low enough that you won't feel awful if your son decides painting models is a little too time consuming (the exact reason I tried with this before buying anything else).

Then if your son really likes painting you can think about a box set. Kill Team might be your best bet because it comes with a Marines and Tau squad, but also a 40k rule book. And it's about half the cost of the other starter packs. If you buy the rulebook separately,, it's actually more expensive. That'll give you enough material for the two of you to start playing together. All you need to do is buy paints.

Even if your son decides do play a different faction, you can probably find someone who would be willing to trade models for whatever faction he wants.

But I've heard GW is cancelling Kill Team, it's no longer available on the GW website.
