According to Paulo Coelho, the pain of the past is was gives a warrior of the light his energy.

A lot of good stuff is on his book: The Manual of the Warrior of the Light

One more thing: for the negative things in your pass, you shall be able to say "never again". (That's from Jack Kornfield)

Yep thats basically it. :) But also - just seeing those things for what they are. (There still is beauty, mellow, friendship, love, laughter ... in the world of the Witcher.) As for "being evil" one definition the DLC suggests is "causing the suffering of others".

Also please recognize how there is a hint of "not being able to follow the Witchers morals" when you are in a position of power, society has put you in. It arguably is even recognized (at least as a possibility) in the relationhip to Ciri in one of the endings.

The Witcher, in a nutshell, is Coelhos Warrior of the Light ( http://www.amazon.com/Warrior-Light-Manual-Paulo-Coelho/dp/0060527986/ ) in a "real" (as in fake.. ;) ) world context. ;)
