Glad you're liking it! I'm jealous, $3 is a complete steal if it's in good shape. And no worries, it's not a huge deal, it's just better to not take the chance, y'know?

If you'd like to give it a good clean or change the keycaps one day, you can get a wire keycap puller here for very cheap. For ways to clean and maintain your keyboard, check out the wiki for this subreddit and you should be set!

Keycap pullers. They're about $7 (for a good wire one) on amazon. Great little tool.

u/pxlnght · 5 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

What switch do you have?If you have clicky blues, there's nothing other than a different switch that can help you.

With the O-rings, they're very easy and nearly risk free to put on. All you need to do is pull off the keycaps using a puller, push the O-ring onto the stem of the keycap, and then put it back on. Really easy, and really hard to fuck up unless you go full caveman and rip some stuff apart.

One minor risk would be the stablizers. I believe that board uses costar stabs, which if removed with too much force you can break keycap inserts. It's unlikely though.

u/hga_another · 4 pointsr/KotakuInAction

That's an excellent chart, and shows why I like Cherry Blue switches, with these dampers to make the end of travel more gentle (see also this key puller to make installing them easy). Relatively light force required (can't imagine you wanting more), and bump and click so I've got tactile and audible feedback. If I was in an multi-person office/ghastly open person office, I'd likely go for Browns without the click.

u/SaltedKittyBits · 4 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I'd definitely recommend a wire puller then. Less likely to damage your keycaps or rip the switch apart!

u/abxyz4509 · 4 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Any wire puller will work. This one or this one will be fine, and they're on Amazon

u/OatmealLife · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

You just pull them straight off.

Key puller tools are available to make it easier. They are normally either a little plastic thing or a wire loop. You push it down under the key, so the key comes up when you pull up on the tool.

Edit: Here's an example puller http://amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AZCGF7K/

u/dogeatdawg · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Like the other poster mentioned, you can pull off the caps if you get under the edges. If you feel like spending money you can get one of these.

u/RedHawk02 · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

As simple as latching onto the key and then pulling off.

Be more careful with larger keys. While not absolutely necessary for anything but the spacebar, for larger keys you should pull one side at a time. So start with the right side, pull, position the puller to the left side, pull, and then if it still hasn't come out, pull from the middle.

You should also look into buying a wire keycap puller

I'm making an assumption that the one you have is a ring puller and those can potentially scratch your keys. You can also make a wire puller with paper clips and some DIY-ing.

Best way to clean is to just generally be clean around your keyboard. That way there's only dust and no grime. After removing keycaps, ways to get rid of dust are compressed air (and I think some use ESD safe vaccums?) For dust or oils/etc on the keyboard chassis itself, you can use a dry towel.

u/Captain_Midnight · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

>Are keyboards posted here ones where people bought individual keys (keycaps?) in sets or individually and then swapped them with the ones on the keyboard they have already?

People around here do both -- full sets and individual keycaps.

> Are all keys a default size or would certain keys bought separately not fit with certain boards?

This article will explain that.

>Also, how does this work if my keyboard has light up keys? Is the lighting below the keys themselves

With the MX switch, most LEDs are right above the stem. You'll rarely find it below the stem. You can pull a key off your keyboard and check for yourself, though you might break the key or the stem if you don't wiggle it off with the proper tool.

u/SwammerDo · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

imo the WASD puller is better, the cheap wire ones get bent out of shape sometimes.

https://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1491374350&sr=1-2&keywords=wire+puller

and then you can buy o-rings on ebay for 99c if you just search "keyboard o-ring) though the shipping will take longer since they're all from china.

u/openapple · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I’m not sure if you might be joshing about pulling off keycaps by hand, but if not, I can totes vouch for getting a keycap puller, such as this handy one from WASD Keyboards. It makes the task much easier.

(There are likewise switch pullers, but I haven’t bought one of those, so there isn’t one in particular that I’m able to recommend.)

u/toomanypapers · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

So you have MX browns? The actual mechanism of MX browns makes virtually no noise- the noise comes from the key "bottoming out" and plastic clacking. The clacking is between the plastic at the base of the key stem and the plastic of the keyboard/switch body. You can put a rubber o-ring at the base of the stem, which eliminates the plastic clack.

Here's a picture that shows o-rings on the keys http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/w/a/wasd_orings2013.jpg

Pretty much, you'd just go buy a set, get a key puller, pull all of your keys, slip the o-rings on, then put the keys back on. It'll reduce your noise very significantly on browns. You could probably find sound comparisons on Youtube if you're curious.

Edit: They're pretty cheap. Here are some o-rings on Amazon and then you'll want a key puller. I recommend this one Most keys will come off easily. For ones like backspace, enter, space, shift, etc, I recommend looking up a guide to make sure you don't bend any stabilizers.

WASD Keyboards Wire Keycap Puller Tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AZCGF7K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ve8XAbBG163S2

Really just any wire type. The small plastic ones scratch the caps.

u/mx0mx · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you have a cherry mx style mechanical keyboard, and I hope you do, you can get one of these wire keycap removers.

u/iampindi · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

From what I heard, those pullers tend to scratch/damage keycaps.

I would suggest using something like https://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K

Nice board!

u/darkjedi1993 · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Yeah. I was THOROUGHLY enthused about finding it for that price. Honestly, it was three bucks and some change.

That's pretty cool. Not to take away from people that could be donated to, but I really wish I had access to electronic recycling centers. I would come away with A LOT of stuff. Hell, I'd even give them money for it, that way they wouldn't have to worry about actually going through with recycling the stuff, I could give it a new, loving home, and they would have more money to dedicate to their cause.

To answer your question, I'm not really sure. I've never used an IC puller to remove key caps. Ive either used a ring puller (http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Mechanical-ABS-Keyboard-Keycap-Puller-for-Cherry-MX-Switch-Keyboards-Key-Cap/141860342492?rt=nc&_soffid=5010560901&_soffType=OrderSubTotalOffer&_trksid=p5731.m3795) or a wire puller (http://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1463328669&sr=8-1&keywords=wasd+wire+keycap+puller+tool) to remove the keycaps. Both are cheap options. I would HEAVILY recommend the wire keycap puller for ALPS and buckling spring (i.e. old IBM or Unicomp keyboards), as they're MUCH harder to remove. I'd still use the wire puller for Cherry (or Cherry-based clone) switches, as the plastic ring pullers break VERY easily. I've torn quite a few up removing ALPS caps in the past, as it was all I had available at the time.

u/ccondon · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

This wire puller from WASD is cheap and works well.

u/Senor_Tacos · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I need this keycap puller to take the keys off of my keyboard and clean it.

I want to soak in a hot tub

u/phlatcappr · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Nice haul.

A wire key puller like this works the best: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AZCGF7K/

You'll need this tool to open the keyboards up:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BQ4XP6/

One of the most common things to fail on a Model M are the plastic rivets that are holding the metal back plate and the top plastic barrel plate (that holds the springs and flippers) with the membranes (that's right, the Model M is a membrane keyboard!) sandwiched between them. Keys will feel mushy or not function when enough rivets in the same area fail. The solution is to replace the rivets with either screws or bolts. Here's more info.

The membranes can be very easily damaged by liquid spills, but you can get new ones and replace them. A screw / bolt mod is needed when replacing membranes.

You can do a screw / bolt mod yourself, but as someone else mentioned, Phosphor Glow does excellent work. He also has a replacement USB controller that lets you plug the keyboard directly into a USB port without adapters. If you do send your board(s) to PG, be very patient.

I'm using this one I bought on Amazon. Should I get something a bit nicer?

u/Mullard85 · 1 pointr/razer

Amazon Link this one is good, just separate the two tong things and put the keycap in between them, and pull up!

u/Chekonjak · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Do you have a wire keycap puller like this?

u/Matt_Williams123 · 1 pointr/razer

It could be that your keys are not propery connected to the switches, I would check that they are all connected by pressing each key on firmly to check if that fixes the issue.

If the propelm pressists however I would recommend that you look at getting a Key Puller which will allow you to remove the keys and check that there is nothing wrong with the switches below the keys.

You can get a key puller for a good price here: http://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K (this will work on any mechanical keyboard)

u/slashemperor · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

As others have said, yep, you can pop off a cap and replace it with another.

I highly recommend getting a wire keypuller to do this with, it will make your life easier. Something like this for reference: https://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482727479&sr=8-1&keywords=key+puller

u/Bathmatician · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Removing key caps isn't recommended? For a Mechanical Keyboard? Maybe they just mean without using a tool.

You might want to get something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K

Either that or Razer has some very fragile keyboards...

u/chilifries · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I use this keycap puller. But the caps cracked when I was trying to put them on the switches, not when I was pulling them off.

u/caodaiwei · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

With a cap remover Something like this. It should be pretty painless. If you want to completely remove the click of a click switch i would look into the the jailhouse blue mod.

u/badillin · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Safest tool is a keycap puller like this

https://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K

But you can take them off using a butter knife, or even your own fingers, just make sure you are pulling straight up so you dont bend the switches.

As for cleaning, i throwthem all in a plastic bag (after taking a picture of the kB so i know where each key should be placed) fill it with water and a bit of soap and shake it a bit, then leave them in for a while, after that i individually take a towel and dry them off one by one.

I had this comment thread bookmarked to see if someone posted a helpful response, and you came through, so thanks for that. Since you seem so knowledgeable, I had a question about keycap pullers. My first MK will be mine in a couple weeks for Christmas, and it comes with a keycap puller, as seen here. However, I believe I've seen some hate towards these types of keycap pullers on /r/mechanicalkeyboards. Do they scratch the keys? Are they inherently flawed and should I not use them? Is one like this the only way to go?

u/GarrettSucks · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards
u/element4life3 · 1 pointr/battlestations

As long as you get a cherry mx compatible keyboard, it is super easy to put your own keycaps on. If you have something like this it makes it easier to pull the old keys off, and it is super easy to just use your fingers to pop the new keys on. Head on over to r/MechanicalKeyboards if you haven't yet!

u/BlackPinkBih · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Do I need a specific keycap puller to use on a Topre board (FC660C). I never put keys on a board before, so I was wondering if there's a certain one I should buy? Would I be good with this one from WASD or should I get one from mechanicalkeyboards? Or does it not matter? I just don't want to mess up any of my topre keycaps.

I have the black ones on my OG BWX and they are exactly what you're looking for. Bonus, they're PBT so the keycaps won't fade with use.

I would highly recommend a keycap puller as well (they can be bought for cheap on amazon as well) to remove the keys so you don't damage any switches. It's also a good tool to have on hand for cleaning. I prefer the wire pullers personally, like these : https://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1541268512&sr=1-3&keywords=keycap+puller&dpID=31aTQBdKGBL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

u/dancingeagles · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

My method for cleaning is above, also here.

Used a WASD Wire Keycap Puller Tool. Amazon Link.

u/MVPhurricane · 1 pointr/todayilearned

f'sho -- the only kind that i've used is one that looks like this but i can't find any non-janky links to one (aka links w/ amazon prime :P). one of those would probably work, as would one of these which look kinda cool, but i've never used one myself (but serve the exact same purpose).

u/PinkyThePig · 1 pointr/pcgaming

This little tool is great for getting keys off: https://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K

I can strip a keyboard dramatically faster with one instead of doing it manually.

u/Harakou · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Ugh, didn't look at the shipping sorry. Nonstandard sellers. :/

There's always this one. It's a little more than you wanted but hey, free shipping. I have it and can confirm it works quite well.

Of course, you can also get one of those cheap ring pullers, but they do scratch against the sides of your keys, which is problematic if they have a soft coating like some do.

u/AnAngryGoose · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

No problem! If you're going to put the o-rings on make sure you get a key cap puller, it's a HUGE pain if you don't have one.

Enjoy! Add me on steam if you want.

You can find them online, they are called keycap pullers but if you are in a pinch and need one ASAP you can use a wire whisk (just bend one of the wires back and use that wire), or you can even use dental floss (wrap it around one finger on both ends so it makes a U shape, then drop it down below the key).

When you are pulling them off, the most important thing is just to gently pull while wiggling the key, so that you don't take the stem out of the keyswitch (although I've never personally had that happen). It's all pretty easy and it's quite difficult to destroy a keyswitch but it never hurts to be gentle with them!

Also, it's a good habit to do one row at a time (if you ever get blank keycaps you'll thank yourself for not doing the whole keyboard at once since each row's keycaps are different heights and angles).

u/victorvito · 0 pointsr/buildapcsales

Add some of these and thank me later! Just be sure to get a keycap puller. I am currently typing from the exact setup and it is a dream.

u/FrankieMoney · 0 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I bought this and it works great and doesn't scratch or break the keys. http://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K
