Waterdog its a book older than the bible, people still use it. Really good at explaining a dogs motivation.

It's easy to follow and it worked well for my dog. It does not have any of the more advanced techniques but it will certainly get you started.

Get Water Dog... it will help you understand your lab more than anything. If you don't plan to train him as a hunting dog, you can stop about half way through the book. It's more for understanding exactly why labs were bred the way they were.
